Feature: Memotron (Knowledge Management)
Relevant source files
The following files were used as context for generating this wiki page:Memotron is an open-source tool for personal knowledge management (PKM), described as "Your memory atlas". It is one of the three core products built within the Tidigit/Nucleus monorepo, alongside Pointron (focus/time management) and Nucleus (a super app combining all tools). Memotron is designed for personal use and focuses on providing a comprehensive, reliable, and intuitive system for capturing, organizing, and retrieving knowledge.
The application is built with SvelteKit and TailwindCSS for the frontend and is designed with an offline-first approach, using local storage solutions like Dexie and LocalForage. While it is open source under the AGPL-3.0 license, full self-hosting including the backend is a future goal.

Core Feature Categories
Memotron's functionality is organized into several distinct categories, each targeting a specific aspect of the knowledge management lifecycle. These categories form the foundation of the user experience and the application's architecture.
| Category | Description |
|---|---|
| App | Core application principles like privacy, reliability, and sustainability. |
| Content | Features related to the creation and management of different content types (e.g., Markdown, PDF, Audio). |
| Capture | Tools for quick and frictionless information capture (e.g., text, camera, audio). |
| Clipping | Browser extensions and tools for saving content from the web, videos, and social media. |
| Curation | Methods for organizing knowledge, such as linking, tagging, and structured data types. |
| Views | Different ways to visualize and interact with the knowledge base (e.g., Calendar, Graph, Board). |

Detailed Feature Breakdown
App Features
This category covers the foundational principles of the Memotron application.
- Source: Memotron is fully open-source with a transparent development process. Community contributions are welcomed.
- Privacy & Ownership: A core tenet is user privacy. The app is designed with an offline-first approach, plans for end-to-end encryption, and a policy against selling user data.
- Reliability: Aims for a "> 99% uptime" with a public status page, mission-critical performance, and no data loss.
- Offlinability: Provides a fully functional offline version with local-first data storage. Synchronization is an opt-in feature for cloud users.
- Sustainability: The business model is designed for longevity, not a quick exit. While the code is open-source, full self-hosting and interoperability are still in development.

Content & Curation
These features allow for rich content creation and powerful organization.
- Markdown: Supports basic and advanced Markdown, including tables and embeds.
- PDF & Audio: Native PDF viewing/annotation and audio playback with local transcription capabilities.
- Nodularity: A novel feature for creating granularity in long-form content. It allows linking, searching, and focusing on specific sub-parts (e.g., headings) of a larger document.
- Types/Objects: A structured data system for creating entities with custom avatars, properties (text, number, date, rating), and relations. This is a powerful alternative to simple tags.
- Link to Curate: The ability to organize new information at the source by tagging or linking it to existing entries during the capture/clipping process.
The diagram below illustrates the structure of a "Type" or "Object" in Memotron.
Views
Memotron provides multiple ways to visualize and interact with the knowledge base.
- Calendar View: A time-based visualization for daily notes and retrospection, with the ability to switch between day, week, month, and year scales.
- Graph View: A global graph to visualize the entire knowledge base and its connections.
- Bird View: A high-level overview of all connected links for a single, local node.
- Board View: A Kanban-style board for visual workflow management.
- Table View: A planned feature for a structured table view with sorting and filtering.

Retrieval & Synthesis
This category focuses on finding and making sense of stored information.
- Search: Includes basic keyword search, fuzzy search, operators, and is designed to be highly performant even with large datasets (50,000+ records).
- Semantic Search: A planned feature for concept-based search using embedding models.
- Summarizer: A planned novel feature for automatic summary generation.
- Public API: A planned feature for integration with external platforms.

Competitive Positioning: Memotron vs. Notion
Memotron is positioned as a strong alternative to other PKM tools like Notion, with a different set of priorities. The data below, used for competitive analysis on the landing page, highlights these differences.
| Feature | Memotron (Implied) | Notion (Rated) | Notes on Notion |
|---|---|---|---|
| Privacy | High (Offline-first, E2EE planned) | 0.3 / 1.0 | No offline-first, no E2EE. |
| Reliability | High | 0.55 / 1.0 | Historically suboptimal performance with large databases. |
| Maintenance | Low (Frictionless) | 0.15 / 1.0 | Requires constant setup and maintenance of workflows. |
| Offlinability | High (Fully functional) | 0.25 / 1.0 | Very limited support for offline use. |
| Web Clipping | High (Rich features) | 0.35 / 1.0 | Rudimentary official clipper; relies on third-party extensions. |

Self-Hosting & Deployment
Currently, only the Memotron frontend application can be self-hosted. This provides an offline-only version of the app without data synchronization between devices.
To deploy the frontend:
- Clone or fork the repository.
- Choose the
memotronapp from the/appsdirectory. - Set the following environment variables before deploying:
VITE_PRODUCT=memotron VITE_STATIC_URL=https://cdn.21n.co
Full-stack deployment, including the backend on Cloudflare, is planned for the future.
