The visual presentation of Shattered Pixel Dungeon is managed through a multi-layered system encompassing asset management, tilemap rendering for environments, animated sprites for characters and items, and a dynamic effects system for particles and animations. This architecture separates static environmental rendering from dynamic entity and effect rendering, allowing for a clear and performant visual experience.
The system has undergone significant evolution, with numerous updates focused on improving visual clarity, adding new assets, and enhancing performance. Key milestones include the introduction of new sprites, overhauled boss fight visuals, region-specific splash arts and music, and the adoption of the libGDX framework for more efficient, cross-platform rendering.
Asset Management
All game assets, including images, sounds, and music, are centrally managed through the Assets.java class. This class acts as a static registry of file paths, preventing hardcoded strings and simplifying asset loading.
Assets are organized into nested static classes for clarity. This structure ensures that all visual and audio components are referenced from a single, reliable source.

Tilemap Rendering
The DungeonTilemap.java class is responsible for rendering the static elements of the dungeon, such as floors, walls, doors, and water. It uses region-specific tile sheets defined in Assets.Environment to give each area of the dungeon a distinct visual theme.
The tilemap handles different visibility states for each tile:
- Unseen: Blacked out, not yet discovered by the player.
- Discovered: Rendered in a desaturated "fog of war" style.
- Visible: Fully rendered and lit.
The level generation system was significantly overhauled in v0.6.0 and v0.9.1 to create more varied and less box-shaped layouts, which directly impacts the complexity and appearance of the rendered tilemap. Further decorative terrain and room variants were added in v3.1.

Sprite System
Sprites are the visual representations of dynamic entities in the game, such as characters and items.
Character Sprites
CharSprite.java is the primary class for rendering all characters, including the hero and enemies. It manages a variety of animations and visual states.
Animations:

Visual States:
CharSprite can be tinted to indicate status effects. The color constants POSITIVE (green), NEGATIVE (red), and WARNING (orange) are used for this purpose. It also handles visual indicators for states like HEALING and LEVITATING.

Item Sprites
ItemSprite.java is responsible for rendering items that are on the dungeon floor. It retrieves the correct visual from a sprite sheet, such as items.png, which is defined in Assets.Sprites. The class handles selecting the specific sub-image from the sheet that corresponds to the item being rendered.

Sprite Class Hierarchy
The following diagram shows the basic inheritance structure for sprites.

Visual Effects System
The visual effects (VFX) system adds dynamic flair to gameplay actions through particles and animations. The Effects.java class serves as a manager for these effects, while specific particle classes like FlameParticle.java define the behavior of individual effect components.
Effect Management
Effects.java manages the lifecycle of various visual elements:
- Particles: Small, numerous images used to create effects like fire, smoke, and magical sparks.
- Banners: Large text-based visuals, such as for unlocking badges (
BadgeBanner). - Floating Text: Numbers and icons that appear above characters to indicate damage, healing, or EXP gain. This was notably enhanced in v2.3 to include icons for damage types.

Particle Lifecycle
A typical particle effect, such as a flame, follows a simple lifecycle managed by the effects system.
This sequence shows how a flame particle is created, updated each frame, and eventually removed once its lifetime expires.

Summary
Shattered Pixel Dungeon's rendering engine is a robust system built on clear separation of concerns. The Assets class provides a centralized resource directory. DungeonTilemap handles the static but visually diverse environments. The sprite system, led by classes like CharSprite and ItemSprite, brings characters and items to life with animations and state-based visuals. Finally, the Effects system adds a layer of dynamic feedback through particles and banners. This architecture has proven flexible, allowing for continuous visual and performance enhancements over the game's long development history.
