Rendering & Build Process
Relevant source files
The following files were used as context for generating this wiki page:The Charlotte project utilizes the Astro framework to build a static blog. The process involves compiling Markdown content, Svelte components, and TypeScript files into a set of optimized static HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files. This pipeline is configured to handle content management, styling, search indexing, and feed generation automatically during the build phase.
The core of the system is Astro's content collections, which treat Markdown files in src/content/posts/ as a primary data source. A series of remark and rehype plugins enhance the standard Markdown, adding features like syntax highlighting, math formulas, and custom admonition blocks. The final output is a static site located in the dist/ directory, ready for deployment on any static hosting platform.
Build and Development Lifecycle
The project's lifecycle is managed through a set of npm scripts defined in package.json. These scripts handle development, building, and maintenance tasks.
Key Scripts
| Command | Description |
|---|---|
pnpm dev | Starts the Astro development server after cleaning the cache. Enables hot-reloading. |
pnpm build | Executes a clean build, generates the static site in dist/, and then runs Pagefind to create a search index. |
pnpm preview | Serves the contents of the dist/ directory to preview the production build locally. |
pnpm clean | Removes cache directories (.astro, dist, node_modules/.vite) to prevent stale data issues. |
pnpm new-post <filename> | Runs a Node.js script to create a new blog post with pre-filled frontmatter. |
pnpm check | Runs astro check for TypeScript type checking within .astro files. |
pnpm format | Formats the codebase using Biome. |
pnpm lint | Checks and fixes code style issues using Biome. |

Production Build Flow
The pnpm build command orchestrates the entire production build process. It first cleans any previous build artifacts and then invokes Astro to generate the static site. As a final step, it uses Pagefind to index the generated content for the client-side search feature.
This diagram illustrates the sequence of operations during a production build.

Content Processing
All blog posts are stored as Markdown files within the src/content/posts/ directory. Astro's content collections API is used to query and process these files.
Frontmatter
Each Markdown post begins with a YAML frontmatter block that defines its metadata. This metadata is used for page rendering, SEO, and content organization.
| Property | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
title | string | The title of the post. |
published | datetime | The publication date. Used for sorting. |
description | string | A short summary of the post. |
image | image | Path to the post's cover image. |
tags | list | A list of tags associated with the post. |
category | string | The category the post belongs to. |
draft | boolean | If true, the post is excluded from production builds. |

Content Fetching and Sorting
The src/utils/content-utils.ts file contains the logic for retrieving and organizing posts.
The getSortedPosts function is central to this process. It performs the following steps:
- Fetches all non-draft posts from the
postscollection using Astro'sgetCollection. - Sorts the posts in descending order by their
publisheddate. - Applies a specific ordering for "pinned" posts, moving them to the top of the list based on the configuration in
src/config.ts. - Injects
nextSlug/nextTitleandprevSlug/prevTitleproperties into each post object for pagination.
This diagram shows the logic for fetching and sorting posts, including the handling of pinned posts.
Markdown Extensions & Rendering
The project enhances Markdown rendering using several remark and rehype plugins, which are configured in astro.config.mjs (inferred from dependencies). Key dependencies for this include remark-math, rehype-katex, astro-expressive-code, and remark-directive.
- Code Blocks:
astro-expressive-codeis used for advanced syntax highlighting. The project adds a custom plugin,pluginCodeToolbar, to inject a toolbar with a language badge and a copy button into each code block. This plugin manipulates the HAST (HTML Abstract Syntax Tree) to insert the toolbar elements.

remark-mathandrehype-katex, allowing for both inline ($..$) and block ($$..$$) LaTeX equations.

Page and Asset Generation
Page Transitions
Page transitions are handled by Swup.js, which intercepts link clicks and replaces page content without a full page reload. The CSS animations for these transitions are defined in src/styles/transition.css. When a page change is initiated, the html element gets an is-changing class, and elements with the transition-swup-fade class are animated out. During the animation, the is-animating class is applied, which sets opacity: 0 and applies a translate-y transform.
/* src/styles/transition.css:2-5 */
html.is-changing .transition-swup-fade {
@apply transition-all duration-200
}
html.is-animating .transition-swup-fade {
@apply opacity-0 translate-y-4
}

Feed Generation (RSS & Atom)
The site generates both RSS and Atom feeds for content syndication. This is handled by dedicated endpoints in the src/pages/ directory.
src/pages/rss.xml.tssrc/pages/atom.xml.ts
The process for generating these feeds is as follows:
- Fetch all sorted posts using
getSortedPosts. - For each post, take the raw Markdown body.
- Render the Markdown to HTML using
markdown-it. - Resolve relative image/link URLs to absolute URLs to ensure they work correctly in feed readers.
- Sanitize the resulting HTML to remove potentially harmful tags, while allowing
<img>tags. - Construct the final XML feed structure with the processed content.
This sequence diagram details the RSS feed generation process.
Search Indexing
The search functionality is powered by Pagefind. During the build process (pnpm build), after the static site is generated in the dist directory, the pagefind --site dist command is executed. This command crawls the generated HTML files, creates a static search index, and places it in dist/pagefind/.
On the client side, the Search.svelte component loads the Pagefind JavaScript library and uses its API (window.pagefind.search()) to perform searches against the pre-built index. In development mode, where the index doesn't exist, it provides mock search results.
