AI Utility Provider

The AI Utility Provider orchestrates communication between the user interface and various Large Language Model (LLM) backends. It manages local instances, remote APIs, and a fallback simulation environment to ensure continuous availability. The system integrates the Model Context Protocol (MCP) to provide models with direct access to local filesystems, web search indexes, and semantic memory.
The provider handles session parameters such as temperature and token limits while routing requests to active providers like Ollama, LM Studio, OpenAI, or Google Gemini. When external endpoints are unreachable or blocked by CORS, an internal agent workspace emulator simulates model responses and tool executions.

Architecture and Data Flow
The AI Utility Provider functions as a dispatch layer. It receives user prompts, session history, and context from virtual files or MCP configurations. The provider then attempts to contact the designated LLM endpoint.
The diagram shows the request routing logic, highlighting the fallback mechanism to the workspace emulator when local endpoints fail.

LLM Provider Management
The system supports three primary types of providers: Local, Remote, and Custom. Each provider contains a list of supported models and a base URL for API communication.
Supported Provider Types
| Provider ID | Name | Type | Default Base URL |
|---|---|---|---|
ollama | Ollama (Local) | local | http://localhost:11434 |
lm_studio | LM Studio (Local) | local | http://localhost:1234/v1 |
openai | OpenAI (Remote) | remote | https://api.openai.com/v1 |
google | Google Gemini (Remote) | remote | https://generativelanguage.googleapis.com/v1beta |
simulator | Built-in Agent Simulator | custom | internal://sandbox |

Response Generation Logic
The generateChatResponse function executes the following sequence:
- Identifies the active provider and model.
- If the provider is
ollama, it sends aPOSTrequest to/api/chatwith a 3500ms timeout. - If the provider is
lm_studio, it sends aPOSTrequest to/chat/completions. - If requests fail or time out, it triggers the "High fidelity workspace simulator".

Model Context Protocol (MCP) Integration
The AI Utility Provider uses MCP to extend LLM capabilities. The emulator intercepts prompts containing specific keywords to simulate tool calls that interact with the local environment.
The sequence shows how the utility provider intercepts semantic queries to trigger simulated tool actions.

Standard MCP Tools
| Tool Name | MCP Source | Description |
|---|---|---|
read_filesystem_file | Local Filesystem | Reads text file contents from the workspace. |
list_filesystem_dir | Local Filesystem | Enumerates directories and sub-folders. |
query_web_search | Brave Web Search | Queries live search indexes for documentation. |
scrape_documentation | Brave Web Search | Extracts markdown from a live URL. |
memorize_fact | Semantic Memory | Stores facts in vector memory (Offline by default). |

Workspace Simulation and Skills
When the emulator is active, it processes prompts to generate formatted content compatible with specific "Skill Plugins." These plugins render complex data types in the user interface.
Skill Recognition
The provider detects specific keywords to activate specialized output formats:
- Visual SVG Sandbox: Activated by keywords like
svg, draw, orvisual. The provider returns an XML-formatted SVG block. - LaTeX Typesetter: Activated by
latex, math, orformula. The provider returns mathematical formulas wrapped in$$delimiters. - JS/Python Playground: The provider identifies code blocks for matrix solving or script execution.

Execution Simulation Code
The simulation uses a timeout to mimic model latency before returning the payload.
// src/utils/ai.ts:79-82
// High fidelity workspace simulator to act as local/remote model & handle MCP / Skills!
await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 1400)); // Simulate thinking latency

Session Parameter Handling
The provider utilizes session configuration to control model behavior. These parameters are passed in the request body to local providers or used by the emulator to adjust the response style.
| Parameter | Type | Description | Range/Default |
|---|---|---|---|
temperature | number | Controls determinism vs. creativity. | 0.0 to 1.2 |
maxTokens | number | Limits the length of the response buffer. | 256 to 8192 |
modelId | string | The specific model string (e.g., llama3.1). | Varies by provider |
systemPromptId | string | Links a PromptPreset for behavior overlays. | general_assistant |

Summary
The AI Utility Provider acts as the central intelligence hub for the Agent application. By abstracting the differences between local Ollama instances, remote APIs, and internal simulations, it provides a consistent interface for the UI. Its integration with the Model Context Protocol allows models to perform complex tasks like filesystem manipulation and web searches, even when running in a restricted browser environment or offline simulation mode.
