Common Errors & Solutions

This page documents the common technical errors encountered during the operation of the PR-Agent automation and the autofix.py script. It provides diagnostic steps and programmatic solutions for issues ranging from API failures to validation errors in autonomous code repair.
Environment and API Failures
The autofix.py script requires specific environment variables and API tokens to interact with Gemini and GitHub. Missing or invalid credentials halt the repair process.
Missing Credentials
The script validates required environment variables at startup. If GEMINI_API_KEY is missing, the process terminates immediately. If GH_TOKEN is missing, the script cannot query the GitHub API or post status comments.

Gemini API Errors
Network requests to Gemini utilize the urllib.request module. Errors during these calls are caught and logged, returning None to the caller to trigger fallback mechanisms or graceful exits.
The system handles HTTP errors specifically by reading the first 500 bytes of the error response for diagnostic logging.

Validation and Verification Failures
Autonomous repairs undergo local verification before being committed. This ensures that AI-generated changes do not introduce new regressions.
Post-Repair Verification Failure
After applying a fix, the script runs the detected test runner (e.g., cargo check, npm test, pytest). If the command fails, the script rolls back the changes using git checkout -- . and posts a failure comment to the Pull Request.

| Error Condition | Action Taken | User Notification |
|---|---|---|
| Test command fails (exit != 0) | Git rollback executed | PR comment with error snippet |
| Git commit fails | Process exits | No push to origin |
| Git push fails | Error logged to stderr | Local changes remain but not shared |

Path Security and Scope Violations
The script contains a safety mechanism to prevent the AI from writing files outside the repository or outside the scope of the current PR.
- Insecure Paths: The
safe_normpathfunction rejects absolute paths or paths containing..sequences. - Out-of-Scope Paths: In
review-fixmode, changes are rejected if the path was not originally flagged by the reviewer or modified in the branch.

Mode-Specific Failures
The system operates in two primary modes: review-fix and ci-fix. Each has unique failure points related to data retrieval.
Review-Fix Data Gaps
review-fix mode fails if no review findings are found or if the file contents exceed the MAX_FILE_BYTES (80,000) limit. If findings exist but Gemini determines no change is needed, the system posts a "no changes warranted" comment.

CI-Fix Detection Issues
ci-fix mode relies on detecting a standard test runner. If the project lacks common configuration files (like Cargo.toml, package.json, or pyproject.toml), the script exits because it cannot validate repairs.

Summary
Common errors in this project primarily stem from API connectivity, missing environment configuration, or validation failures during the code repair cycle. The autofix.py script mitigates these by implementing strict path validation, automated git rollbacks on test failure, and clear reporting via GitHub PR comments. Developers should ensure GEMINI_API_KEY and GH_TOKEN are correctly configured in the CI environment to avoid execution failures.
