The Spelunking & Topology Census is a specialized diagnostic and auditing framework within the IDAHO-VAULT ecosystem designed to measure the self-sufficiency, coherence, and organizational structure of a multi-agent AI swarm environment. Its primary objective is to verify if a coherent shared cosmology (a unified understanding of the vault's purpose and rules) emerges from independent AI agents ("cosmonauts") who are provided with minimal orientation and different entry points into the repository.
This system combines the Spelunking Census Protocol, which utilizes biological flocking models (Boids) to measure agent alignment, with the Topology Census, a classification pass for mapping the "Connector Maze" of external service integrations. Together, they ensure that the vault remains a durable, constitutionally governed record of both human journalism and agentic reasoning.

Spelunking Census Protocol
The Spelunking Census is a "baker's dozen" (13) run of minimally-oriented cold readers sent into the vault to independently reconstruct its cosmological conceit. It tests whether the vault carries its own "gravity" without active human intervention.

The Boids Isomorphism
The protocol adapts Craig Reynolds' 1986/87 Boids flocking model to measure the emergent properties of the swarm. In this implementation, "flockmates" are the documents in a reader's coverage neighborhood rather than other agents.
| Signal | Boids Factor | Project Measurement |
|---|---|---|
| Cohesion | Cohesion | Measures how tightly independent reconstructions cluster toward a consensus centroid. |
| Separation | Separation | Measures the "healthy spread" or polysemy that prevents the reading-space from collapsing. |
| Alignment | Alignment | Measures shared heading or purpose (telos), independent of physical position in the vault. |
| Perception | Radius | The conditioning kernel representing the specific documents actually opened by the reader. |

The 13 Doors (Independent Variables)
The experiment varies only the first-touch document provided to the agent to test different vault regions.
The deliverable of this process is a Map of the Doors, identifying which entrances successfully self-orient a stranger to the vault's true cosmology.

Synthesis and Metrics
The synthesis pass process transforms raw agent reports into a convergence/divergence map. A critical metric used is Krippendorff's alpha ($\alpha$), used to estimate agreement across set-valued items like entity nodes and telos facets.
Synthesis Workflow
Output Schema
Each cosmonaut must return a report consisting of exactly eight fields:
- Place-name: The identified name of the environment.
- Position: Up to 7 core entities ranked by centrality.
- Central Conceit: 1-2 sentences on what binds the entities.
- Heading (Telos): The core verb and primary beneficiary.
- Governing Rules: Up to 3 inferred rules.
- Perception Log: Paths of documents actually opened.
- 3x [read]: The three most influential documents.
- 3x [*]: Flagged inferences or guesses.

Topology & Connector Census
The Topology Census is a classification pass (v2) used to map the "Connector Maze"—the external services integrated with the vault via MCP bridges or APIs.
Connector Categories
The census classifies connectors to define their doctrinal role and promotion paths.
| Category | Connectors | Doctrinal Role |
|---|---|---|
| Core | GitHub, Linear, Slack | Authoritative for execution, transport, and state. |
| Adjunct | Gmail, Google Calendar, Drive, Box | Informative/Read-first; not authoritative. |
| Deferred | Cloudflare, Hugging Face | Platform lanes awaiting activation plans. |

Authority Hierarchy
The census enforces GitHub Primacy as the sole core authority for the vault's transport and coordination.
Operational Safety: The Quiet Box
The Spelunking Census operates under the Quiet Box Doctrine to prevent experimental noise from contaminating the canonical repository (main).
- Hermetic Access: Agents are strictly read-only and cannot write to the vault.
- Apocrypha Stamping: All outputs are stamped
[cold-read apocrypha]and quarantined. - No Welding: Synthesis must emit a map of perspectives, never a single "welded" canon.
- Branch Isolation: Runs use bare branches without Pull Requests to avoid triggering automation noise.

Summary of Results (Run 1)
The first run of the Spelunking Census (2026-06-28) yielded a grounded synthesis recomputed from recovered subagent reports.
- Cohesion Alpha: $+0.392$ (indicates moderate emergent consensus).
- Convergence Core: $13/13$ agents correctly identified Logan Finney, the Constitution, and the Swarm as the central entities.
- Verification: The cold-root control (Door-13) successfully self-oriented to the core vault cosmology.

The Spelunking and Topology Census serves as the vault's immune system, verifying that the complex layers of agentic personae and external connectors remain aligned with the human sovereign's intent and the project's constitutional baseline.
