Image Generation Model Integration
Relevant source files
The following files were used as context for generating this wiki page:1. Introduction
The Image Generation Model Integration is a server-side module responsible for creating images from text prompts by interfacing with an internal "Forge" Image Service. Its primary function is to abstract the complexities of the external API call, handle authentication, process the response, and persist the generated image to a permanent storage location, returning a public URL.
This feature is encapsulated within the server/_core/imageGeneration.ts file and provides capabilities for both text-to-image generation and image editing. Currently, this dynamic generation capability is a backend-only feature and is not utilized by the mobile application's frontend, which employs static assets like the hero image on the home screen.

2. Architecture and Data Flow
The image generation process is a linear flow initiated by a call to the generateImage function. This function orchestrates the interaction between the application's server, the external Forge Image Service, and the application's file storage solution.
The following diagram illustrates the high-level data flow for generating an image.
3. Core Functionality
The entire feature is exposed through a single asynchronous function, generateImage.

3.1. generateImage(options)
This function serves as the main entry point. It takes a set of options, communicates with the backend image generation service, and returns a response containing the URL of the newly created image.
Parameters (GenerateImageOptions)
The function accepts a single options object with the following properties:
| Parameter | Type | Description | Required |
|---|---|---|---|
prompt | string | The text prompt describing the image to be generated or the edits to be made. | Yes |
originalImages | Array<{ url?: string; b64Json?: string; mimeType?: string; }> | An optional array of original images for editing or image-to-image tasks. | No |

Return Value (GenerateImageResponse)
The function returns a promise that resolves to an object containing the URL of the stored image.
| Property | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
url | string | The public URL of the generated and stored image. |

4. API Interaction and Storage
The process involves two key external interactions: calling the Forge Image Service to generate the image data and then calling the storagePut utility to persist that data.
4.1. Forge Image Service Call
The generateImage function makes a POST request to a specific endpoint of the Forge API.
- Endpoint Construction: The URL is constructed by combining the
BUILT_IN_FORGE_API_URLfrom environment variables with the static pathimages.v1.ImageService/GenerateImage. - Authentication: The request is authenticated using a Bearer token from the
BUILT_IN_FORGE_API_KEYenvironment variable. - Request Body: The body of the request is a JSON object containing the
promptandoriginal_imagesfrom the options.

4.2. Image Persistence
After receiving a successful response from the Forge API, the image data is processed and stored. The sequence diagram below details this interaction.
This diagram shows the flow from the initial call to generateImage to the final return of the public URL after storing the image received from the Forge API.
- The
b64Jsonstring from the API response is decoded into aBuffer. - The
storagePutfunction fromserver/storage.tsis invoked with the buffer, a generated filename (generated/{timestamp}.png), and themimeType. storagePuthandles the upload to the configured cloud storage.- The public URL returned by
storagePutis then returned bygenerateImage.

5. Data Structures
The system uses specific data structures for handling image generation requests and for representing image data in other parts of the application, such as the LLM interface.
| Structure Name | File | Purpose | Fields |
|---|---|---|---|
GenerateImageOptions | imageGeneration.ts | Defines the input for the generateImage function. | prompt, originalImages |
GenerateImageResponse | imageGeneration.ts | Defines the output of the generateImage function. | url |
ImageContent | llm.ts | Represents an image to be sent to an LLM, typically for analysis. | type: "image_url", image_url: { url, detail } |
The ImageContent structure from the LLM module is not used for generation but shows how image URLs (like the one produced by this service) are consumed by other AI components in the system.

6. Error Handling
The generateImage function includes checks to ensure proper configuration and to handle API failures:
- Configuration Check: It first verifies that
BUILT_IN_FORGE_API_URLandBUILT_IN_FORGE_API_KEYare present in the environment variables. If not, it throws an error. - API Response Check: After the
fetchcall, it checks if the response status isok. If the request fails, it throws an error including the HTTP status, status text, and any response body detail.
