Project Configuration
Relevant source files
The following files were used as context for generating this wiki page:The BMSview project configuration is managed through a set of files that define the build process, development environment, styling pipeline, and deployment settings. The frontend is built using Vite with React and TypeScript, styled with Tailwind CSS, and the entire application, including serverless backend functions, is deployed on Netlify.
This document outlines the key configuration files and their roles. The configuration is designed to provide a streamlined development experience with features like path aliasing and a robust, automated deployment pipeline. For more details on the overall system, see the Architecture Overview.
Deployment and Backend (netlify.toml)
The netlify.toml file is the central configuration for deploying the project on Netlify. It specifies the build commands, the directory for serverless functions, and other deployment-related settings.
The following diagram illustrates the Netlify deployment flow as defined in netlify.toml.

Build Configuration
The [build] section defines how Netlify prepares the project for deployment.
| Setting | Value | Description |
|---|---|---|
command | "npm run build" | The command executed to build the production assets. This script is defined in package.json. |
publish | "dist" | The directory containing the static frontend assets that will be deployed. |
functions | "netlify/functions" | The directory where Netlify looks for serverless function files. |

Functions Configuration
The [functions] section provides specific settings for the serverless functions.
| Setting | Value | Description |
|---|---|---|
node_bundler | "esbuild" | Specifies esbuild as the bundler for Node.js functions, which is fast and efficient. |
external_node_modules | ["express"] | Instructs the bundler to exclude the "express" module, assuming it will be available in the runtime environment. |

Frontend Build System (vite.config.ts)
Vite is used as the frontend build tool, providing a fast development server and an optimized production build. The configuration is located in vite.config.ts.
Core Configuration
- Plugin: The project uses the
@vitejs/plugin-reactplugin to enable support for React, including Fast Refresh in development. - Server: The development server is configured to run on port
5173.

Path Aliases
To avoid long relative import paths and improve code readability, Vite is configured with path aliases. These aliases are also mirrored in tsconfig.json for TypeScript's module resolution.
The diagram below shows how aliases map to physical directories.
The following table details the configured aliases:
| Alias | Resolves to |
|---|---|
@ | src |
components | src/components |
services | src/services |
state | src/state |
hooks | src/hooks |
utils | src/utils |

Styling Pipeline
The project's styling is managed by Tailwind CSS, processed by PostCSS.
Tailwind CSS (tailwind.config.js)
This file configures the Tailwind CSS framework.
- Content: The
contentarray specifies the files that Tailwind should scan to find class names. This is crucial for tree-shaking unused styles in the production build. It is configured to scan all.ts,.tsx, and.htmlfiles within thesrcdirectory and the rootindex.html. - Theme: The
themesection is used to customize Tailwind's default design system. Theextendblock allows for adding new values without overwriting the defaults. - Plugins: The configuration includes the
@tailwindcss/formsplugin to provide better default styling for form elements.

PostCSS (postcss.config.js)
PostCSS is a tool for transforming CSS with JavaScript plugins. In this project, it is used to process the Tailwind CSS directives and enable autoprefixing for browser compatibility.
The build process involving these tools is as follows:

TypeScript Configuration (tsconfig.json)
The tsconfig.json file configures the TypeScript compiler (tsc). It ensures type safety and works in tandem with Vite's configuration for a seamless development experience.
Compiler Options
The compilerOptions define how TypeScript should compile the code. Key options include:
"target": "ES2020": Compiles code to a modern JavaScript version."useDefineForClassFields": true: Adheres to the standard ECMAScript behavior for class fields."module": "ESNext": Uses modern ES module syntax."jsx": "react-jsx": Enables the modern JSX transform for React."strict": true: Enables all strict type-checking options."paths": Defines the same path aliases asvite.config.tsto allow TypeScript to resolve module paths correctly.

File Inclusion
- The
includearray specifies which files should be part of the compilation. It is configured to include all files in thesrcdirectory and thenetlify/functions/solar-estimate.tsfile, ensuring the serverless function written in TypeScript is also type-checked. - The
referencesarray is used for project references, linking to a separatetsconfig.node.jsonfor Node.js-specific configurations like the Vite config file itself.

Conclusion
The configuration of BMSview is a well-structured system that separates concerns for deployment, frontend building, and styling. netlify.toml automates the deployment process, while vite.config.ts and tsconfig.json create a powerful and efficient development environment for the React and TypeScript frontend. Finally, tailwind.config.js and postcss.config.js provide a modern, utility-first CSS pipeline. Together, these files ensure a consistent, maintainable, and scalable foundation for the project.
