Shadcn UI Plugin

The @nx-extend/shadcn-ui plugin integrates shadcn/ui components into an Nx workspace. It automates the setup of specialized UI and utility libraries, configures Tailwind CSS, and provides tools to add individual or bulk components.

Core Features
The plugin manages the lifecycle of shadcn/ui components within a monorepo through three primary mechanisms:
- Workspace Initialization: Generates a dedicated UI library for components and a utility library for shared logic (e.g., Tailwind merging).
- Component Management: Provides an
add-componenttarget to fetch and install React components directly into the workspace. - Configuration Automation: Generates and maintains
components.jsonand Tailwind configurations required by the shadcn/ui CLI.

Initialization Logic
The init generator sets up the foundational architecture. It creates two distinct React libraries: one for the UI components and one for utilities.
Library Architecture
The following diagram illustrates the relationship between the generated libraries and the workspace configuration.
The generator performs several specific actions:
- Library Creation: Uses
@nx/react:libraryto create both libraries with CSS support and ESLint. - Cleanup: Removes default files like
package.jsonand placeholder files insrc/libto prepare for shadcn/ui content. - Path Mapping: Adds TypeScript configuration paths for the import aliases defined in the workspace.
- Configuration: Writes the
components.jsonfile to the workspace root, linking to the utility library's Tailwind and CSS files.

Dependency Management
The initialization process installs several mandatory peer and dev dependencies to support component styling and logic.
| Dependency | Purpose | Version Range |
|---|---|---|
class-variance-authority | Manages component variants | ^0.7.0 |
tailwind-merge | Efficiently merges Tailwind classes | ^2.3.0 |
tailwindcss-animate | Standard shadcn/ui animations | ^1.0.7 |
lucide-react | Default icon set | ^0.395.0 |
tailwindcss | Core styling engine | ^3.4.6 |

Component Generation
The plugin extends the UI library with a custom add-component target. This target uses the @nx-extend/shadcn-ui:add executor.
Execution Flow
When you run a command to add a component, the following sequence occurs:
Workspace Configuration
The plugin relies on specific metadata stored in components.json to map aliases to the actual library directories.
| Alias | mapped Path | Source Reference |
|---|---|---|
ui | <ui-lib-import-path> | init.impl.ts:104 |
utils | <utils-lib-import-path> | init.impl.ts:106 |
hooks | <ui-lib-import-path>/hooks | init.impl.ts:107 |
lib | <ui-lib-import-path> | init.impl.ts:108 |
The Tailwind configuration is centralized in the utility library to ensure all applications using the UI components share the same theme and design tokens.

Testing and Quality
The plugin includes an end-to-end (E2E) test suite that validates the full initialization and addition workflow. These tests ensure that:
- The
initcommand creates the expected file structure, includingtailwind.config.ts,global.css, andcn.ts. - TypeScript path aliases are correctly appended to
tsconfig.base.json. - Components like
buttonorsidebar(with hooks likeuse-mobile.tsx) are correctly placed within the target library.

Summary
The Shadcn UI Plugin provides a structured approach to using shadcn/ui in Nx monorepos by enforcing a separation between UI components and utility logic. It automates the complex configuration of path aliases and Tailwind integration, allowing developers to focus on building features with standardized components.
