The ratatui-wireframe crate is a lightweight, zero-dependency widget designed for the ratatui ecosystem. Its primary purpose is to render and rotate 3D wireframe models within a terminal environment using Braille characters. It serves as the core engine for ComChan's 3D spatial telemetry visualization, allowing users to project 3D space onto a 2D terminal canvas without requiring complex graphical libraries.

Architecture and Core Components
The crate is structured around two main entities: the Model, which defines the geometry, and the WireframeWidget, which handles the transformation and rendering logic.
3D Data Modeling
The geometry is represented by a collection of vertices (3D coordinates) and edges (indices connecting those vertices). The crate supports built-in primitives and external file formats.
Transformation Pipeline
The WireframeWidget implements the Widget trait from ratatui. During the render call, it executes a three-step pipeline:
- Vertex Rotation: Applies Euler angle rotation matrices (Pitch, Yaw, Roll) to every vertex in the model.
- Perspective Projection: Projects the 3D coordinates into 2D space using a fixed distance and scale factor.
- Canvas Drawing: Utilizes the
ratatui::widgets::canvas::Canvaswith aBraillemarker to draw lines between projected points.

Supported 3D Models and Formats
ratatui-wireframe provides several ways to define 3D shapes, ranging from hardcoded primitives to external files.
| Model Type | Source / Format | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Cube | Built-in (.wrfm) | Standard 8-vertex, 12-edge cube; best for general orientation. |
| Tetrahedron | Built-in (.wrfm) | 4-vertex triangular pyramid; useful for heading/directional telemetry. |
| Octahedron | Built-in (.wrfm) | 6-vertex diamond shape; provides high readability for complex rotations. |
| Custom WRFM | .wrfm file | A simple, human-readable text format for vertices and edges. |
| Custom OBJ | .obj file | Standard 3D object format (requires the ratty feature flag). |

Custom Model Loading Logic
The crate can parse .obj files by extracting vertex (v) and face/line (f/l) definitions. It specifically handles 1-based OBJ indices and converts them to 0-based internal indices.
Rendering and Layout Adaptation
A critical feature of the WireframeWidget is its ability to handle terminal resizing without distorting the 3D model.
Aspect Ratio Management
Because terminal characters (especially Braille) are typically twice as tall as they are wide, the widget applies an aspect ratio correction.
- Desktop (std): Dynamically calculates
x_extentbased on thearea.widthandarea.heightof the rendering chunk. - Embedded (no_std): Uses a hardcoded aspect ratio of 2.0 to squish the Braille font appropriately.

The Stationary Gnomon
In addition to the main model, the widget renders a stationary X/Y/Z axis triad (gnomon) at the origin to provide spatial context.
- X-Axis: Red line
- Y-Axis: Yellow line
- Z-Axis: Light Blue line

Feature Flags and Environment Support
The crate is designed for both standard desktop applications and bare-metal environments.
| Feature | Description | File Dependency |
|---|---|---|
std | Default. Enables dynamic aspect ratio calculation and layout caching. | Cargo.toml:24 |
ratty | Enables native .obj file parsing and rendering via Ratty Graphics Protocol. | Cargo.toml:26 |
no_std | Enabled by disabling default-features. Uses num-traits for float operations. | widget.rs:4-6 |

Implementation Example: Telemetry Loop
The following logic demonstrates how ComChan integrates ratatui-wireframe into its telemetry loop, including smooth interpolation (lerp) of Euler angles.

let now = Instant::now();
let dt = now.duration_since(state.last_frame_time).as_secs_f64();
let lerp_speed = 15.0;
let amount = (lerp_speed * dt).clamp(0.0, 1.0);
// Calculate shortest path to prevent 360 wrap-around spinning
let pitch_diff = (target_pitch - state.display_pitch + 180.0).rem_euclid(360.0) - 180.0;
state.display_pitch = (state.display_pitch + pitch_diff * amount).rem_euclid(360.0);
// Render the widget
let wireframe = WireframeWidget::new(pitch.to_radians(), yaw.to_radians(), roll.to_radians())
.title("3D Telemetry")
.color(Color::Green)
.model(selected_model);
f.render_widget(wireframe, area);

The ratatui-wireframe crate provides a specialized 3D visualization layer for terminal-based applications. By abstracting complex vertex transformations and projection math into a standard Ratatui widget, it enables ComChan to provide high-fidelity IMU and spatial telemetry feedback across diverse terminal environments.
