The Local Playback Engine provides the core audio streaming, decoding, and playback capabilities for Spotty. It utilizes a pinned Rust/librespot leaf to manage Spotify sessions, Connect functionality, and audio streaming. Decoded PCM data crosses a narrow FFI (Foreign Function Interface) adapter from the Rust engine to the Swift-based AudioRenderer, which utilizes AVFoundation for final audio output.

Architecture and Component Flow
The playback system is split between a Rust-based backend and a Swift-based frontend. The Rust backend handles the complex logic of Spotify protocol communication, session management, and media decoding. The Swift frontend manages the user interface, high-level playback coordination, and the macOS audio stack.
System Overview Diagram
This diagram shows the high-level flow of audio data and control commands between the major components.
Rust Backend (spotty-playback)
The Rust leaf is the sole production owner of streaming, decryption, and decoding. It maintains process-wide ownership of the Spotify session. Key responsibilities include:
- Session Management: Managing the
librespot_core::session::Sessionand authentication. - Connect Integration: Utilizing
librespot_connectto handle Spotify Connect commands and state. - Audio Pipeline: Orchestrating the
Player,Mixer, andAudioFormatto produce raw PCM. - FFI Exposure: Exporting a C-ABI through
ffi.rsthat is consumed by the Swift layer.

Component Summary Table
| Component | Responsibility | Source Reference |
|---|---|---|
session_lifecycle | Manages the lifetime and connectivity of the Spotify session. | lib.rs:25 |
player_control | Handles playback commands (play, pause, seek). | lib.rs:20 |
proxy_sink | Receives decoded PCM data and passes it across the FFI. | lib.rs:22 |
ffi | Defines the extern "C" exports for Swift consumption. | lib.rs:16 |
connect | Implements the Spotify Connect protocol bridge. | lib.rs:14 |
Swift Integration (RustPlaybackEngine)
RustPlaybackEngine.swift is the exclusive caller of the SpottyPlaybackCore C-ABI. It translates high-level Swift commands into FFI calls and provides a stream of playback events to the PlaybackCoordinator.
Execution and Command Serialization
All playback commands are serialized to ensure thread safety and state consistency. The engine uses typed C snapshots to transfer state across the FFI boundary, covering connection, playback, device, and queue status.

Audio Rendering Pipeline
Audio data follows a direct path from the Rust engine adapter to the AudioRenderer. It never enters the observable UI state to prevent performance bottlenecks.
- PCM Generation: The Rust engine decodes audio into PCM frames.
- FFI Callback: The engine invokes a callback into Swift, passing a pointer to the PCM data.
- PCMWriteSpace: Swift uses
PCMWriteSpaceto manage the buffers received from the Rust layer. - AudioRenderer: The
AudioRendererconsumes the buffers and schedules them for playback via AVFoundation.
Invariants and Safety
- Blocking: Callbacks from the Rust engine to Swift must be non-blocking. Swift must never block the Rust callback thread.
- Isolation: Playback state mutation is restricted to the
PlaybackReducer. The engine only emits snapshots that represent the current state. - Security: The engine must never log sensitive data such as OAuth tokens, cookies, or private identifiers.
- Ownership: Every Rust allocation passed to Swift must have a documented release path to avoid memory leaks.

Summary
The Local Playback Engine acts as a bridge between the high-level macOS application and the low-level Spotify protocols. By encapsulating the complex librespot logic in a Rust-based leaf and providing a narrow, typed FFI to Swift, the system ensures high-fidelity 320 kbps audio playback and robust Spotify Connect integration while maintaining native macOS performance.
