Dependencies
Relevant source files
The following files were used as context for generating this wiki page:This document outlines the external libraries and modules the LostData project relies on to function. The project is primarily a Node.js application utilizing the Express framework, with dependencies managed via package.json. It also includes a standalone Python script for database management, which uses Python's standard library.
The core of the application is a web server that provides a REST API for managing "model" data, persisting it in a MongoDB database, and serving a static frontend. The dependencies support functionalities such as web routing, database interaction, session management, and data import/export.
Node.js Backend Dependencies
The primary application is built on the Node.js runtime. All required packages are listed in the package.json file.

The following table summarizes the purpose of each dependency within the project.
| Package | Version | Description |
|---|---|---|
cors | ^2.8.5 | Enables Cross-Origin Resource Sharing, allowing the frontend to make requests to the API from any origin. |
csv-parser | ^3.2.0 | Parses CSV data streams, used for the CSV import functionality. |
dotenv | ^17.2.3 | Loads environment variables from a .env file into process.env. |
express | ^5.1.0 | A web application framework for Node.js, used to build the REST API and serve static files. |
express-session | ^1.18.2 | Middleware for managing user sessions, used for login/logout and role-based access control. |
json2csv | ^6.0.0-alpha.2 | Converts JSON data into CSV format, used for the CSV export functionality. |
mongoose | ^8.19.0 | An Object Data Modeling (ODM) library for MongoDB, used to define schemas and interact with the database. |
multer | ^2.0.2 | Middleware for handling multipart/form-data, used for file uploads (specifically CSV imports). |

Backend Architecture Overview
The following diagram illustrates how the key dependencies interact within the Express server to handle incoming requests.
This diagram shows an incoming user request being handled by the Express application, which uses various middleware (cors, express-session) before routing the request. API routes then use mongoose for database operations or multer for file uploads.

Core Framework and Middleware
express: The backbone of the application, responsible for creating the server, defining API endpoints (routes), and managing middleware.cors: Used to allow requests from any origin (origin: "*"), which is crucial for a decoupled frontend to communicate with the backend API.express-session: Manages user sessions. It is configured with a secret key and is used to persist user login state, particularly for differentiating between 'admin' and 'chatter' roles.

Database and Data Modeling
mongoose: Provides an abstraction layer for interacting with the MongoDB database. It is used to:- Connect to the database using a URI from environment variables.
- Define the
Modelschema, which includes fields likename, profile, pricing, andhistory. - Perform all CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) operations on the
modelscollection.
The connection is established at server startup. The database URL is configured to use an environment variable or a local default.

Data Import/Export
The application supports importing and exporting model data in both JSON and CSV formats, facilitated by several dependencies.
multer: Handles file uploads for the CSV import feature. It is configured to save uploaded files temporarily to theuploads/directory.csv-parser: Reads the uploaded CSV file stream provided bymulterandfs, parsing it into JavaScript objects.json2csv: Converts the array of model documents fetched from MongoDB into a CSV string for the export feature.
The diagram below shows the sequence of events during a CSV file import.

Configuration
dotenv: This package is used to manage environment-specific configurations, such as the database connection string. It is invoked at the very beginning of the server's entry point to ensure all environment variables are loaded before they are needed.

Python Script Dependencies
A separate Python script, model_database.py, provides a command-line interface for managing model data in a JSON file. This script does not use the Node.js backend or MongoDB; it is a self-contained utility. It relies on Python's built-in standard libraries.
json: Used for serializing (writing) and deserializing (reading) the model data to and from themodels.jsonfile.os: Used to check for the existence of the data file (os.path.exists) before attempting to load from it.

Conclusion
The LostData project's dependencies are well-structured to support its primary function as a web-based model database. The Node.js backend leverages a standard set of powerful libraries like Express and Mongoose to build a robust REST API, while specialized packages like Multer and json2csv handle complex data I/O. The use of dotenv for configuration and express-session for security demonstrates standard best practices. The inclusion of a separate Python script with its own simple dependency set provides an alternative, file-based management tool, showcasing a multi-faceted approach to data interaction within the repository.
