Snippet & Content Management represents the core logic for persisting, organizing, and serving code-related data within the CodeBot ecosystem. The system handles multiple content types, including standard code snippets, large files, and curated library items, ensuring technical consistency through automated normalization and versioning.
The scope of this module covers the entire lifecycle of a code snippet: from initial submission (either via user input or markdown import) to validation, approval (for library items), storage in MongoDB, and eventual retrieval through various interfaces like the Telegram bot, WebApp, or MCP server.

Core Data Models
The system utilizes specialized data structures to manage different types of content efficiently. These models are defined as Python dataclasses and map directly to MongoDB collections.
Content Entities
- CodeSnippet: The primary entity for standard code storage. It includes versioning, metadata for favorites, and dashboard pinning logic.
- LargeFile: Designed for content that exceeds standard message limits, tracking file size and line counts explicitly.
- Snippet (Library): Used for the public, curated snippet library. It includes an approval workflow status (
pending,approved,rejected).

Entity Relationship Diagram
The following diagram illustrates the relationships between users and various content entities stored in the database.
Content Persistence and Versioning
The system implements an append-only versioning strategy. When a user saves a file with an existing name, the Repository creates a new document incrementing the version number rather than overwriting the previous content.
The Save Process
- Normalization: Code is passed through
normalize_codeto ensure consistent formatting before storage. - Metadata Calculation: The system calculates
file_sizeandlines_countduring persistence to avoid re-processing during list operations. - State Inheritance: New versions inherit status flags such as
is_favoriteoris_pinnedfrom the previous version. - Cache Invalidation: Saving a snippet triggers invalidation of user-level caches to ensure the WebApp and Bot display fresh data.

Save Logic Flow
Snippet Library Service
The Snippet Library is a curated collection of reusable code. Unlike user-private snippets, library items undergo a moderation process.
Submission and Approval Workflow
Users submit snippet proposals that are stored with a pending status. Admins can then approve or reject these proposals. Once approved, snippets become public and searchable.
| Function | Purpose | Input |
|---|---|---|
submit_snippet | Creates a pending proposal with basic length validation. | title, description, code, language, user_id |
approve_snippet | Sets status to approved and records the admin ID. | item_id, admin_id |
reject_snippet | Sets status to rejected and stores a reason. | item_id, admin_id, reason |
list_public_snippets | Retrieves approved snippets, merging DB items with In-App built-ins. | q (query), language, page, per_page |

Library Retrieval Sequence
This diagram shows how the service merges database results with built-in curated snippets.
Import and Ingestion
The project includes specialized utilities for bulk-importing content from external sources, specifically Markdown files or URLs (GitHub/Gists).
Markdown Parser Logic
The import_snippets_from_markdown.py script parses Markdown content using regex to identify:
- Headers (H2-H4): Used as the snippet title.
- Bold Labels: Identifies "Purpose" or "Why useful" as the description.
- Code Fences: Extracts the code block and its language tag.

Duplicate Prevention
During import, the script checks for existing titles in the database (case-insensitive) to prevent redundant entries.

Content Retrieval Optimization
To handle large volumes of content, the system employs "Smart Projection." List operations (like get_user_files) exclude heavy fields like code or content by default.
Retrieval Projection Table
| Mode | Included Fields | Excluded Fields | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| List/Search | file_name, language, updated_at, tags | code, content, raw_data | database/repository.py:82-95 |
| Direct Fetch | All fields (including code) | None | mcp_server/backend.py:52-60 |
| Sticky Notes | content, color, line_start, anchor_text | Visual pixel position data | mcp_server/backend.py:63-74 |
Summary
Snippet & Content Management in CodeBot is a layered system that prioritizes data integrity through versioning and performance through smart projection. By separating private user content from a moderated public library, it facilitates both personal organization and community knowledge sharing. The use of append-only versioning ensures no data loss during edits, while the library service provides a structured workflow for content curation.
