Request Lifecycle

The request lifecycle in this project defines the journey of an HTTP request from the moment it enters the application through the public entry point until a response is returned to the client. It encompasses environment initialization, dependency management, application bootstrapping, and the handling of the request through a structured pipeline.
At a high level, the lifecycle ensures that the framework is correctly configured, maintenance states are checked, and all necessary services—such as routing, middleware, and exception handling—are prepared to process the incoming Illuminate\Http\Request.
Entry Point and Initialization
The lifecycle begins at the public/index.php file, which serves as the single entry point for all requests. The first action taken is recording the start time to track performance.
Maintenance Mode and Autoloading
Before the application is fully loaded, the system checks for a maintenance file in storage/framework/maintenance.php. If this file exists, it is required immediately to handle the maintenance state. Subsequently, the Composer-generated autoloader is registered to handle class loading throughout the application.

Request Capture
The application utilizes the Illuminate\Http\Request::capture() method to create a request instance from PHP globals. This captured request is then passed into the application's handling logic.

Application Bootstrapping
The bootstrapping phase transitions the lifecycle from the flat entry script into the structured framework environment. This is managed by the bootstrap/app.php file.
Configuration and Routing
The application is configured with its base path and several essential services. This includes setting up routing for web interfaces, console commands, and health checks.
| Feature | Configuration Detail | Source File |
|---|---|---|
| Web Routing | routes/web.php | bootstrap/app.php:7 |
| Console Routing | routes/console.php | bootstrap/app.php:8 |
| Health Check | /up endpoint | bootstrap/app.php:9 |
Middleware and Exception Handling
The bootstrapping process allows for the definition of middleware stacks and exception handling logic. These components are registered as closures that the framework executes during the request processing phase.

Execution Flow
The following diagram illustrates the sequential flow of the request from the initial hit on index.php through the bootstrap process to the final response.

Core Components and Dependencies
The lifecycle relies on several core classes and configuration elements to maintain state and provide functionality.
Key Classes
Illuminate\Foundation\Application: The central container that manages service bindings and handles the request.Illuminate\Http\Request: Represents the incoming HTTP data.Tests\TestCase: Used during the testing lifecycle to simulate requests and assert responses.

Primary Configuration
The config/app.php file provides the environment settings used throughout the lifecycle, such as the application URL, locale, and encryption settings.
| Option | Description | Source |
|---|---|---|
name | The name of the application | config/app.php:15 |
env | Current environment (e.g., production) | config/app.php:28 |
debug | Flag for detailed error reporting | config/app.php:41 |
timezone | Default date-time timezone (UTC) | config/app.php:69 |
Testing Lifecycle
When running feature tests, the request lifecycle is simulated to ensure application behavior is correct. A test request follows a similar path but is initiated via a testing trait.
public function test_the_application_returns_a_successful_response(): void
{
// Simulates an HTTP GET request to the root URL
$response = $this->get('/');
// Asserts that the lifecycle completed with a 200 status
$response->assertStatus(200);
}

The request lifecycle is a structured process that ensures every HTTP request is handled consistently. By separating the entry point, the bootstrapping logic, and the core application handling, the framework provides a robust foundation for building and testing web applications.
