ManageIQ is an open-source management platform designed to provide insight, control, and automation for hybrid IT environments. It enables enterprises to manage diverse infrastructures—including virtual machines, containers, networks, and storage—from a single, unified interface. By centralizing management, ManageIQ addresses the complexities of orchestrating workloads across private and public clouds.
The platform is structured around four primary functional pillars: Insight, Control, Automate, and Integrate. These pillars allow users to discover resources, enforce security policies, automate routine IT processes, and integrate with existing systems management tools.

Core Functional Pillars
ManageIQ delivers its capabilities through four distinct feature sets that categorize the various modules of the system.
| Pillar | Capabilities |
|---|---|
| Insight | Discovery, Monitoring, Utilization, Performance, Reporting, Analytics, Chargeback, and Trending. |
| Control | Security, Compliance, Alerting, Policy-Based Resource and Configuration Management. |
| Automate | IT Process, Task and Event, Provisioning, Workload Management and Orchestration. |
| Integrate | Systems Management, Tools and Processes, Event Consoles, CMDB, RBA, and Web Services. |

Insight and Reporting
The Insight pillar relies heavily on a robust reporting engine. This system transforms raw utilization and performance data into actionable charts and reports. It supports various chart types, including performance timelines and utilization timestamps for clusters, hosts, and virtual machines.
The reporting system uses specific formatters (HTML, Text, and Chart) to present data to the user via Dashboard Widgets.

Architectural Design: The Plugin System
ManageIQ is designed as a modular system where core functionality is extended through plugins. This architecture allows for specialized providers (e.g., Amazon, VMware, OpenStack) to be developed and maintained independently of the core framework.
Plugin Generation
The platform includes a dedicated PluginGenerator that scaffolds new modules. This ensures consistency across the ecosystem by generating standardized file structures, gemspecs, and engine configurations.
Operational Lifecycle: Requests and Tasks
Operations in ManageIQ, such as provisioning or migration, are managed through a standardized request lifecycle. Every action is tracked as an MiqRequest, which may spawn one or more MiqTask instances.
Request Workflow
- Creation: A user or automated process initiates a request (e.g.,
VmProvisionRequest). - Approval: The request enters an approval state (Pending, Approved, or Denied).
- Execution: Once approved, the request is queued for execution via the Automation Engine or Provider operations.
- Logging: All events, warnings, and errors are logged to a
RequestLogfor auditing.
| Request Type | Description |
|---|---|
MiqProvisionRequest | VM Provisioning, Cloning, and Publishing. |
VmMigrateRequest | Moving VMs between hosts or datastores. |
VmRetireRequest | Lifecycle retirement of virtual resources. |
AutomationRequest | Generic automation tasks via the engine. |

Environment and System Management
ManageIQ provides a centralized environment management module (ManageIQ::Environment) to handle application initialization, database migrations, and asset compilation.
Key Environment Tasks
- Database Management: Automated tasks for creating (
db:create), migrating (db:migrate), and seeding (db:seed) the PostgreSQL database. - Dependency Resolution: Integration with Bundler to ensure all gems and plugin dependencies are satisfied.
- UI Asset Pipeline: Parallelized threads for updating UI assets and recompiling them when changes are detected in plugins.

Conclusion
ManageIQ provides a comprehensive framework for managing complex hybrid IT environments through its pillars of insight, control, and automation. Its modular plugin-based architecture and standardized request-task lifecycle allow it to scale across different cloud providers while maintaining a consistent management experience for IT operators and developers.
