Background Script Utilities
Relevant source files
The following files were used as context for generating this wiki page:The Background Script Utilities are a collection of helper classes located in the src/thunderbird/background_util/ directory. They provide encapsulated functionality for common background tasks required by the Ghostbird add-on, such as managing alarms, displaying notifications, handling UI elements, and detecting specific Thunderbird tabs. These utilities serve as wrappers around the Thunderbird MailExtension API (messenger), promoting a clean separation of concerns and making the main background script (background.ts) more focused on the core application logic of managing the GhostText session.
The architecture follows the Dependency Inversion Principle, where these utilities are instantiated and injected into other components. Each utility class is designed as a singleton within the application's lifecycle.

Core Components
The following table provides an overview of the main utility classes.
| Class | Description | Key Dependencies |
|---|---|---|
AlarmHeart | Prevents the background script from being suspended by MV3 by creating a periodic alarm. | messenger.alarms |
NotificationTray | Manages the creation and display of system notifications to the user. | messenger.notifications |
ButtonMenu | Creates and manages the context menu items associated with the Ghostbird compose_action button. | messenger.menus |
ComposeTabDetector | Provides logic to find and identify the active mail compose tab. | messenger.tabs |

The diagram below illustrates how the main background script consumes these utilities.
This diagram shows the main background script using the utility classes, which in turn interact with the Thunderbird WebExtension APIs.

Alarm Heart
The AlarmHeart class is a critical component for ensuring the background script remains active. Due to Manifest V3's event-driven nature, background scripts can be suspended by the browser to conserve resources. AlarmHeart prevents this by setting up a recurring alarm.

Functionality
- Start: The
start()method creates an alarm with the nameHEARTBEAT_ALARM_NAME. This alarm fires periodically. - Stop: The
stop()method clears the alarm, allowing the background script to be suspended if no other activity is occurring. - Alarm Listener: The class listens for the
onAlarmevent. When its specific heartbeat alarm is triggered, it simply returns a resolved promise. This minimal activity is sufficient to reset the script's idle timer and prevent suspension.

State Flow

Notification Tray
The NotificationTray class provides a simple interface for displaying system notifications to the user. It abstracts the details of the messenger.notifications.create API call.

Methods
| Method | Parameters | Description |
|---|---|---|
show() | options: NotificationOptions, message: string, title?: string | Creates and displays a notification. The message is internationalized using messenger.i18n.getMessage. |

Button Menu
The ButtonMenu class is responsible for managing the context menu that appears when a user right-clicks the Ghostbird icon in the mail compose window's toolbar (compose_action).
Sources: src/thunderbird/background_util/button_menu.ts:4-5
Functionality
- Creation: The
create()method sets up the menu items. It defines a "Disconnect" menu item that is only visible in thecompose_actioncontext. - Update: The
update()method can change the properties of the menu, such as enabling or disabling items based on the application's state. - Event Handling: It listens for
onClickedevents frommessenger.menusto handle user interaction with the menu items.

Compose Tab Detector
The ComposeTabDetector utility is used to locate the currently active mail compose window tab. This is essential for the background script to know which tab to interact with.
Sources: src/thunderbird/background_util/compose_tab_detector.ts:4-5
Logic Flow
The getComposeTab() method implements the following logic to find the correct tab:
- It first queries for the currently active tab in the current window.
- It checks if this active tab is a mail compose window using
messenger.compose.getComposeDetails(). - If it is, the tab is returned.
- If not, it queries all tabs across all windows.
- It filters this list to find any tab that is a compose window.
- If one or more compose tabs are found, it returns the first one in the list.
- If no compose tab is found, it returns
undefined.

Conclusion
The Background Script Utilities are a set of focused, single-responsibility classes that form the foundation of the add-on's background operations. By abstracting direct interactions with the Thunderbird WebExtension APIs, they contribute to a more maintainable and testable codebase. They handle essential but auxiliary tasks like keeping the service worker alive, user notifications, and context-aware UI management, allowing the primary business logic in ghosttext-session and ghosttext-runner to remain decoupled from the specifics of the Thunderbird environment.
