The flext-target-ldif project is a Singer-compliant target designed to output data in the LDAP Data Interchange Format (LDIF). As part of the FLEXT ecosystem, it serves as an integration layer that consumes Singer stream records and transforms them into structured LDIF entries suitable for LDAP directory imports or archival. The project leverages flext-core, flext-ldif, and flext-meltano to provide a typed, robust implementation for enterprise ETL workflows.

Core Architecture
The system is structured around three primary components: the FlextTargetLdif class, which manages the overall Singer target lifecycle; the Sink class, which handles stream-specific record processing; and the FlextTargetLdifWriter, which executes the physical formatting and writing of LDIF files.
System Components
| Component | Description |
|---|---|
FlextTargetLdif | The main entry point that handles configuration validation and Sink orchestration. |
Sink | A stream-level handler that manages record buffers and interacts with the writer. |
FlextTargetLdifWriter | The low-level utility that transforms records into LDIF syntax, handling encoding and line folding. |
FlextTargetLdifSettings | A Pydantic-based model for validating target configuration and domain rules. |

High-Level Data Flow
The flow begins with the Singer Tap sending records through STDIN. FlextTargetLdif routes these records to the appropriate Sink based on the stream name. The Sink then utilizes FlextTargetLdifWriter to generate the final LDIF output.
The diagram shows the transition from raw Singer data to validated LDIF output.

Configuration and Settings
The project utilizes FlextTargetLdifSettings to define and validate user-provided configuration. This includes mandatory fields like output paths and templates for Distinguished Names (DN).
Configuration Parameters
| Key | Type | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
output_path | str | ./output | Directory where LDIF files will be written. |
dn_template | str | uid={uid},ou=users,... | Python format string to generate the entry DN. |
file_naming_pattern | str | {stream_name}_{timestamp}.ldif | Pattern for naming output files. |
line_length | int | 78 | Maximum length of an LDIF line before folding. |
base64_encode | bool | False | Whether to force Base64 encoding for all attributes. |

The Writing Process
The FlextTargetLdifWriter is responsible for the technical details of the LDIF format, including Base64 encoding for special characters and line folding to maintain compatibility with standard LDAP tools.
Logical Sequence of Writing a Record
When a record is processed, the writer performs several transformations to ensure compliance with the LDIF specification.
This diagram illustrates the internal logic of the writer when receiving a single record from a sink.

Attribute Handling
The writer checks every value to see if it requires Base64 encoding. Attributes require encoding if they start with a space or colon, contain non-ASCII characters, or contain newlines.
def _needs_base64_encoding(self, value: str) -> bool:
"""Check if a value needs base64 encoding."""
if value and value[0] in {" ", ":"}:
return True
try:
value.encode("ascii")
except UnicodeEncodeError:
return True
return "\n" in value or "\r" in value

Summary
flext-target-ldif provides a structured approach to generating LDIF files from Singer data streams. By integrating Pydantic-based validation through FlextTargetLdifSettings and specialized formatting logic in FlextTargetLdifWriter, it ensures that data extracted from various sources can be reliably transformed for LDAP consumption. The architecture separates stream management (Sinks) from low-level file I/O (Writer), allowing for efficient batch processing and clear error handling during the ETL lifecycle.
