Stdout Store Operations

The Stdout Store is a specialized implementation of the EntryStore interface within the cron-ext utility. Its primary purpose is to provide a non-persistent, output-only target for Meltano cron schedules. Unlike the default crontab store, which manages the local user's crontab file, the Stdout Store emits generated cron entries directly to the standard output stream for custom handling by external tools or manual inspection.
This operation is triggered by specifying the stdout target during CLI invocation. It is particularly useful for users who want to manage their scheduling through external orchestrators while still leveraging the extension's ability to format Meltano schedules into valid cron syntax.

Architecture and Inheritance
The Stdout Store is part of a pluggable storage architecture defined in the cron_ext.stores module. It inherits from the EntryStore abstract base class, which defines the required properties and behaviors for any cron entry storage backend.
Class Structure
The following diagram illustrates the relationship between the base store and the stdout implementation:
The StdoutEntryStore is explicitly marked as unmanaged (is_managed = False), meaning the extension does not track or update entries once they are emitted.

Execution Flow
When a user executes the install command with the --target=stdout option, the Cron extension class initializes the StdoutEntryStore. The extension generates the required shell scripts and cron strings and then assigns them to the store's entries property.
Sequence of Stdout Emission
The following sequence diagram shows how data flows from Meltano schedules to the standard output:
The store's setter method utilizes the Python print function with flush=True to ensure immediate visibility of the generated cron lines.

Component Specifications
| Component | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
is_managed | Property (bool) | Set to False. Indicates the store does not maintain state. |
entries (Getter) | Property (tuple) | Always returns an empty tuple () as no state is stored. |
entries (Setter) | Method | Accepts an iterable of strings and prints them to stdout, separated by newlines. |
Target.stdout | Enum Value | The identifier used in the CLI to select this store. |

Functional Constraints
Because the Stdout Store is unmanaged, certain operations available to the crontab store are restricted or behave differently:
- Read Operations: Requesting current entries from the Stdout Store via the
listcommand results in an empty output because the store does not track previously emitted entries. - Uninstallation: Attempting to run the
uninstallcommand against the stdout target results in aValueError. This is because there is no persistent storage to "uninstall" from. - Persistence: Scripts are still generated in the
.meltano/run/cron-ext/directory, but the cron-formatted strings pointing to these scripts are only displayed once in the terminal.

if not self.store.is_managed:
raise ValueError("Cannot uninstall from an unmanaged cron entry store")

Summary of Stdout Operations
The Stdout Store provides a stateless path for integrating Meltano schedules with external cron-based systems. By implementing the EntryStore interface with a simple print logic and disabling management features, it allows the extension to function as a pure formatting utility when persistence within the system crontab is not desired.
