Introduction
The FlxOS Development Roadmap serves as a comprehensive strategic guide for the evolution of a modern desktop environment designed for ESP32 microcontrollers. It prioritizes core system stability, connectivity enhancements, and a rich user interface powered by LVGL 9 and LovyanGFX. The project is currently in its Alpha stage, focusing on transitioning toward a stable v1.0.0 release by addressing critical features like OTA updates and power management.

Release Milestones & Versioning
FlxOS follows a structured release path, moving from core framework establishment to advanced system integration and long-term ecosystem growth.
v1.0.0 Alpha (Current State)
The Alpha phase established the foundational architecture, including the AppManager, WindowManager, and a comprehensive Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) supporting over 30 display drivers. Key built-in applications such as Settings and Files are functional, along with the connectivity suite for WiFi and Hotspot management.

Core System & Hardware Roadmap
The roadmap classifies tasks by priority (P0 to P3) and complexity (Simple to Epic), ensuring that critical core components are addressed before low-priority enhancements.
Core System Enhancements
While the AppManager and WindowManager are complete, several critical system-level tasks remain in the "Planned" or "Future" status.
| Task | Priority | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| OTA Update System | P1 | ⏳ Planned | Critical for remote firmware updates |
| Power Management | P1 | ⏳ Planned | Sleep modes and battery optimization |
| Watchdog Timer | P1 | ⏳ Planned | System crash recovery mechanism |
| Plugin System | P3 | 💡 Future | Dynamic application loading capability |

Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) Development
FlxOS currently leverages LovyanGFX for high-performance display and touch support. Future HAL expansion aims to standardize peripheral access across different ESP32 targets.
- Planned: GPIO HAL (Button/LED control), I2C/SPI HAL for sensor integration.
- Future: Audio HAL (I2S/DAC) and Camera HAL (ESP32-CAM support).

Connectivity & Networking Future
The connectivity suite is a primary focus for IoT-centric use cases. The project intends to expand beyond basic WiFi to a full messaging and discovery stack.
Connectivity Roadmap Progress
- WiFi (✅ Completed): Station mode, scanning, and SoftAP (Hotspot) with NVS persistence.
- Bluetooth (🔄 In Progress): Basic enable/disable is functional; pairing and file transfer (OBEX) are planned for future cycles.
- IoT Protocols (⏳ Planned): MQTT Client for messaging and an HTTP Server for web-based device configuration.

UI & Application Ecosystem
The user interface roadmap focuses on improving the desktop experience and expanding the library of built-in productivity tools.
UI Features
- Status Bar: Currently undergoing enhancement to include active WiFi and battery widgets.
- Gestures: Planned implementation for swipe, pinch, and long-press interactions to leverage the multi-touch HAL.
- Internationalization (i18n): Future support for multi-language localization and accessibility features like high-contrast modes.

Testing, Quality, and Documentation
To reach a stable release, the project has identified several gaps in quality assurance and developer documentation.
Quality Assurance Goals
Currently, only the CI/CD pipeline (GitHub Actions) is fully implemented. Future goals include:
- Unit & Integration Testing: Systematic component testing to reduce regression.
- QEMU Emulation: Enabling hardware-less testing to speed up development cycles.
- Performance Profiling: Detailed memory and CPU analysis to optimize the FreeRTOS task scheduling.
