Chroot: Debian Integration

Debian Integration via Chroot is a method within the Termux-Desktops project to run a full Debian 12 (Bookworm) environment on rooted Android devices. Unlike the Proot-Distro method, Chroot provides superior performance and closer-to-native system isolation by changing the apparent root directory for the running process and its children. This integration allows users to run complete Desktop Environments (DE) like XFCE4 with audio support via PulseAudio and graphical output through Termux:X11.

Prerequisites and Initial Setup
To utilize the Chroot Debian integration, the Android device must be rooted. The setup relies on several external components and Termux packages to establish the environment and graphical bridge.
Core Requirements
- Root Access: Mandatory for mounting system directories and executing the
chrootcommand. - Busybox: Must be flashed via Magisk (e.g., BuiltIn-BusyBox) to provide necessary Unix utilities like
mountandchroot. - Termux Packages: Specific repositories and packages are required for the X11 server and audio.

Required Termux Packages
| Package | Purpose |
|---|---|
x11-repo | Repository for X11 related tools |
root-repo | Repository for root-specific tools |
termux-x11-nightly | Android X11 server for graphical output |
tsu | Termux su wrapper for root access |
pulseaudio | Sound server for audio redirection |

Installation Architectures
The project supports both automatic and manual installation workflows for the Debian Chroot environment.
Automatic Installation Workflow
The chroot_debian_installer.sh script automates the process of downloading the rootfs, extracting it, configuring system files, and setting up the initial user and Desktop Environment.
Manual Installation Steps
Users can manually set up the environment by extracting a Debian 12 rootfs (arm64) to /data/local/tmp/chrootDebian and configuring the mount points manually. Key steps include creating a start_debian.sh script to handle the busybox mount operations and the final chroot entry.

System Configuration and Mounting
For the Debian environment to function correctly inside a Chroot, the installer or manual script must bind several Android system directories to the Chroot path.
Mount Points Table
| Source Path | Chroot Target Path | Mount Type | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
/dev | $DEBIANPATH/dev | --bind | Hardware device access |
/sys | $DEBIANPATH/sys | --bind | Kernel/System information |
/proc | $DEBIANPATH/proc | --bind | Process information |
devpts | $DEBIANPATH/dev/pts | -t devpts | Terminal support |
tmpfs | $DEBIANPATH/dev/shm | -t tmpfs | Shared memory (Electron apps) |
/sdcard | $DEBIANPATH/sdcard | --bind | Access to Android internal storage |

Network and User Fixes
After entering the Chroot for the first time, specific fixes are applied:
- DNS: Setting
nameserver 8.8.8.8in/etc/resolv.conf. - Groups: Creating Android-specific groups like
aid_inet(3003) andaid_graphics(1003) to allow the Debian environment to access network and display resources through Android's permission system.

Execution and Graphical Interface
Launching the Desktop Environment requires a coordinated sequence between Termux (the host) and the Chroot (the guest).
Initialization Sequence
- Termux Host: Starts PulseAudio and the Termux:X11 server.
- Chroot Guest: Executed via
tsuandbusybox chroot. - Environment Variables: The
DISPLAY=:0andPULSE_SERVER=tcp:127.0.0.1:4713variables are exported to link the GUI and Audio to the Android apps.
Summary of Key Features
The Debian Chroot integration provides a complete Linux experience with the following highlights:
- Desktop Environments: Primarily supports XFCE4, but scripts exist for LXDE, Cinnamon, and KDE.
- Audio Integration: Audio is routed through PulseAudio via a TCP socket to the host Termux environment.
- Rootfs Stability: Uses a Debian 12 arm64 base for modern package compatibility.
- Storage Access: Direct access to Android
/sdcardthrough bind mounts.
