State management in this project is built upon Nanostores, a tiny state manager for multi-framework apps. It utilizes an atomic approach where state is divided into small, independent units called "atoms" and "maps". This architecture ensures high performance by only re-rendering components subscribed to specific state changes and facilitates Hot Module Replacement (HMR) during development.
The system is designed to manage complex interactions between the AI chat interface, a virtual filesystem (WebContainers), a code editor (CodeMirror), and the local browser-based filesystem.

Core Store Architecture
The state is organized into specialized stores that encapsulate specific domains of the application. The WorkbenchStore acts as a central orchestrator, managing sub-stores for files, terminal sessions, previews, and editor state.
Key Store Components
| Store | Purpose | Primary Data Structures |
|---|---|---|
WorkbenchStore | High-level UI state and coordination. | artifacts (Map), showWorkbench (Atom) |
FilesStore | Manages WebContainer virtual filesystem state. | files (MapStore) |
EditorStore | Manages documents currently open in the editor. | documents (MapStore), selectedFile (Atom) |
FileSystem | Manages local directory synchronization. | fileChanges (Atom), selectedDirectoryHandle (Atom) |
ThemeStore | Manages application-wide visual theme. | themeStore (Atom) |

Filesystem and Synchronization Logic
The system maintains synchronization between the WebContainer's in-memory filesystem and the editor state. It also supports optional persistence to the user's local machine via the File System Access API.
File Update Flow
When a file is modified in the editor, the WorkbenchStore coordinates updates across the virtual filesystem and persistence layers.

External Change Detection
The WorkbenchStore periodically checks for external changes in the local directory to ensure the editor stays in sync with outside modifications.

Editor State and Computed Values
The EditorStore uses computed atoms to derive state. For example, currentDocument is automatically recalculated whenever either the list of documents or the selectedFile changes.
// From app/lib/stores/editor.ts
this.currentDocument = computed([this.documents, this.selectedFile], (documents, selectedFile) => {
if (!selectedFile) {
return undefined;
}
return documents[selectedFile];
});

Artifact and Action Tracking
The system tracks "Artifacts" (AI-generated groups of actions) and individual actions (shell commands or file creations) using a MapStore.
- ArtifactState: Tracks the ID, title, and an
ActionRunnerinstance for a specific AI output. - ActionRunner: Responsible for executing the specific steps within an artifact.

Theme Management
Theme state is managed through a simple atom and synchronized with the DOM via root.tsx.
| Feature | Implementation |
|---|---|
| Storage | localStorage key bolt_theme. |
| Syncing | useEffect in Layout updates data-theme attribute on <html>. |
| Default | Respects prefers-color-scheme: dark if no value is set. |

Conclusion
The state management system leverages Nanostores to create a reactive, performant environment capable of handling high-frequency file updates and complex UI states. By decoupling the virtual filesystem, editor documents, and local persistence into distinct atoms and maps, the architecture maintains clarity and enables features like cross-tab synchronization and robust development workflows.
