State Management with BLoC

State management in the MoodTune application is primarily handled using the Business Logic Component (BLoC) pattern. This approach separates the presentation layer from the business logic, facilitating a unidirectional data flow and highly testable code. The project utilizes the flutter_bloc and bloc packages to manage complex application states, such as authentication status, song analysis, and Spotify integration.
BLoCs are provided globally at the root of the application via MultiBlocProvider in the app/view/app.dart file, ensuring that essential states like Authentication and Analysis are accessible across all features. This architecture follows Clean Architecture principles where the presentation layer (BLoC and UI) interacts with the domain layer through use cases.

BLoC Architecture and Data Flow
The application implements a standardized BLoC pattern across all features. Each BLoC manages a specific domain area by receiving Events from the UI and emitting new States based on the results of domain-level Use Cases.
Core Components of a BLoC Feature
- Events: Objects representing user actions or system triggers (e.g.,
LoginEvent,AnalyzePlaylistEvent). - State: A single immutable class representing the current UI state, typically using the
copyWithpattern and anenumfor status tracking. - Logic: Asynchronous operations that call repository methods and map
Either<Failure, T>results to state changes.
The diagram shows the standard unidirectional data flow from the UI to the BLoC and back.

Global BLoCs
MoodTune utilizes several global BLoCs initialized during the application bootstrap process to handle cross-cutting concerns.
| BLoC Name | Responsibility | Scope |
|---|---|---|
AuthBloc | Manages Supabase authentication state (login, logout, registration). | Global (App Root) |
SpotifyBloc | Handles Spotify OAuth, profile data, and playlist fetching. | Global (App Root) |
AnalysisBloc | Manages song/playlist mood analysis, history, and audio uploads. | Global (App Root) |

Authentication BLoC
The AuthBloc is critical for managing the user's session. It interacts with AuthRepository to perform operations like email/password login, Google/Apple Sign-In, and account deletion. It works in tandem with the Routing System to redirect users based on their authenticated status.

Analysis BLoC
The AnalysisBloc handles the primary feature of the app: mood analysis. It manages state for multiple sub-operations, including:
- Playlist analysis via
AnalysisRemoteDataSource. - Direct song analysis by track ID.
- Multipart audio file uploads.
- Retrieving analysis history for authenticated users.

Standard Implementation Pattern
The project enforces a strict pattern for BLoC implementation to ensure consistency. States use a status enum to track operation progress (initial, loading, success, error).
// Standard Result Handling in BLoCs
final result = await _repository.analyzePlaylist(event.playlistId);
result.fold(
(failure) => emit(state.copyWith(
status: AnalysisStatus.error,
error: failure.message
)),
(analysis) => emit(state.copyWith(
status: AnalysisStatus.success,
currentAnalysis: analysis
)),
);

Routing Integration
The BLoC state is often used to drive navigation logic. While go_router manages the transitions, the authentication state provided by SupabaseAuthService (which mirrors the AuthBloc state) acts as a trigger for the router's refreshListenable.
This sequence shows how the BLoC-managed authentication state triggers reactive routing updates.

State Persistence and Logging
- BlocObserver: The
bootstrap.dartfile initializes aBlocObserverto monitor all state transitions and events globally. - Logging: Transitions are logged using
Talker, ensuring that developers can trace state changes during debugging. - Dependency Injection: BLoCs are injected with their required use cases using
GetIt, which is configured inlib/di/injector.dart.

Summary
State management in MoodTune is a robust implementation of the BLoC pattern, integrated deeply with Clean Architecture. By centralizing business logic in BLoCs and using a standardized state-handling pattern with dartz's Either type, the application ensures that the UI remains a pure reflection of the underlying data models. Global providers ensure that essential features like authentication and mood analysis are seamlessly available across the entire navigation stack.
