Docker deployment provides a containerized environment for running the Telegram Summary Bot as a long-running worker service. This method ensures consistent dependency management and simplifies deployment across various platforms like VPS, Render, or Railway.

Image Construction and Lifecycle
The Docker image encapsulates the Python environment and all necessary dependencies defined in requirements.txt. The bot operates as a single-process worker that utilizes long polling to interact with the Telegram API.
Build and Execution Flow
The following diagram illustrates the lifecycle of the container from image building to the active polling loop.
The workflow ensures the bot remains active unless manually stopped or a fatal error occurs.

Configuration Management
Docker deployment relies on environment variables passed via an .env file or direct flags. These variables control bot behavior, logging, and performance parameters.
| Variable | Requirement | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
TELEGRAM_BOT_TOKEN | Required | None | Authentication token from @BotFather. |
LOG_LEVEL | Optional | INFO | Level for Python logging (DEBUG, INFO, etc). |
POLL_TIMEOUT | Optional | 30 | Timeout in seconds for Telegram long polling. |
MAX_STORED_MESSAGES | Optional | 100 | Messages retained per chat for summarization. |
SUMMARY_SENTENCES | Optional | 5 | Sentence limit for the extractive summary. |

Environment Integration
The application uses python-dotenv to load configurations. In a Docker context, these are typically injected through the --env-file flag during the docker run command.
# Building the image
docker build -t telegram-summary-bot .
# Running the container with environment variables
docker run --env-file .env --restart unless-stopped telegram-summary-bot

Runtime Architecture
The bot functions as a worker service. It does not expose web ports but maintains an outbound connection to api.telegram.org using urllib3.
Message Processing Logic
When the container is running, it manages an in-memory chat_messages structure to track history for chat-specific summaries.
This architecture stores messages in a defaultdict of deques with a maxlen defined by MAX_STORED_MESSAGES.

Deployment Requirements
To deploy the bot successfully within a Docker container, the following dependencies and conditions must be met:
- Dependencies: The container must install packages from
requirements.txt, includingurllib3for API requests andpython-dotenvfor config management. - Network: The container requires outbound HTTPS access to
https://api.telegram.org. - Process Management: The container should be configured with a restart policy (e.g.,
unless-stopped) to ensure high availability. - Signal Handling: The bot implements
handle_shutdownto processSIGINTandSIGTERMsignals, allowing for graceful container stops.

Conclusion
Docker deployment is the recommended method for production environments, providing a self-contained unit that manages its own dependencies and execution state. By utilizing the provided environment variable configuration, developers can quickly scale or migrate the bot worker across different container orchestration platforms.
