Theming & Styling (Radix)

OpenWork utilizes a design system built upon the Radix UI color palette, integrated via Tailwind CSS and SolidJS. The system is designed to provide a premium, high-contrast, and calm user experience that avoids typical "developer vibes" in its default mode. It supports both light and dark modes with a focus on 60fps animations and smooth micro-interactions.

Radix Color System Architecture
The styling architecture is centered around the Radix UI color scale, which provides a 12-step palette for every color. This system ensures consistent contrast and semantic meaning across different UI components.
Tailwind Integration
The project overrides the default Tailwind color theme to use Radix color variables exclusively. These variables are mapped in tailwind-colors.ts and utilized through a safelist pattern to allow dynamic color application.
export const radixColors = {
gray: {
1: 'var(--gray-1)',
2: 'var(--gray-2)',
// ... up to 12
},
blue: {
1: 'var(--blue-1)',
// ...
}
};

Color Scale Usage Guidelines
The 12-step scale is applied according to specific semantic functional requirements:
| Scale Step | Functional Purpose | Usage Examples |
|---|---|---|
| 1 - 2 | Backgrounds | App background, sidebar, cards, code blocks |
| 3 - 5 | Component Backgrounds | Default (3), Hover (4), and Selected/Active (5) states |
| 6 - 8 | Borders | Separators (6), Interactive borders (7), Focus rings (8) |
| 9 - 10 | Solid Backgrounds | Brand accents, solid buttons, high-chroma overlays |
| 11 - 12 | Text | Low-contrast (11) and High-contrast (12) text |

Theme Implementation
OpenWork manages theme state (Light/Dark/System) through a combination of CSS variables, data-theme attributes on the document element, and Tailwind's dark mode class support.
Theme Resolution Flow
The application determines the initial theme during the document head execution to prevent "flash of unstyled content" (FOUC).
The flow ensures that components rendered by SolidJS are immediately aware of the resolved theme via the dark class in Tailwind.

Component Styling Patterns
Components utilize a mix of utility classes and internal logic to handle theme-specific styling, particularly for complex elements like the PartView (which renders markdown and tool outputs).
Dynamic Theming in Components
Components often accept a tone prop or detect developerMode to adjust their visual density and color usage. For instance, code blocks and inline code spans use different Radix steps based on the current tone.
Animation and Motion
Styling includes custom utilities for motion to meet the 60fps performance target.
- Soft Pulse: Used for status indicators (1.5s cubic-bezier).
- Progress Shimmer: Linear infinite animation for loading states.
- Command Highlight: A 2s ease-out animation triggered when a command is saved.

Markdown & Rich Text Styling
Markdown rendering is handled via marked with custom renderers that apply Radix-based Tailwind classes to raw HTML elements. This ensures that generated content (like assistant responses) maintains theme consistency.
- Headings: Use
text-gray-12with varying font sizes (e.g.,text-2xlfor H1). - Links: Styled with
text-blue-600andunderline-offset-2. - Tables: Utilize
border-gray-300andbg-gray-50for headers.

Summary
The OpenWork styling system leverages Radix UI's semantic color scales to deliver a consistent, accessible, and high-performance interface. By integrating these scales directly into Tailwind CSS and using a document-level theme resolution strategy, the project ensures that its "slick and fluid" design goals are met across both desktop and mobile platforms while maintaining strict visual parity with its core design principles.
