Autoimport Subsystem

The Autoimport Subsystem is a specialized component within the Rope refactoring library designed to facilitate the automatic discovery and insertion of Python import statements. It maintains a cache of global names available across a project and its dependencies, allowing developers to quickly locate the module providing a specific name and generate the appropriate import or from ... import statement. Sources: rope/contrib/autoimport/sqlite.py:45-50, rope/refactor/importutils/init.py:1-6
The subsystem currently supports two primary backends: a legacy pickle-based storage and a modern, high-performance SQLite-based implementation. The SQLite implementation is the recommended backend, offering improved speed, thread safety, and search capabilities. Core Architecture and Data Models
The subsystem relies on a set of standardized definitions to categorize Python packages, modules, and names. This structured data allows the system to distinguish between different types of sources, such as standard library modules versus local project files.
Data Structures
The ModuleInfo, Package, and Name structures form the backbone of the index.
| Structure | Purpose | Key Fields |
|---|---|---|
Package | Represents a collection of modules or a single file. | name, source, path, type |
Name | Represents a specific identifier (class, function, etc.) indexed for import. | name, modname, package, source, name_type |
SearchResult | The result of a search query, including the generated import string. | import_statement, name, source, itemkind |

Source Classification
Packages are classified by their origin to prioritize search results (e.g., favoring standard library over site-packages).
- PROJECT: Local project packages.
- BUILTIN: Modules compiled into Python (e.g.,
sys). - STANDARD: The Python Standard Library.
- SITE_PACKAGE: Third-party packages installed via pip.

SQLite Backend Implementation
The AutoImport class in the SQLite backend provides the primary API for managing the name index and performing searches. It handles database initialization, resource observation, and parallelized cache generation. Sources: rope/contrib/autoimport/sqlite.py:84-127
Database Lifecycle and Thread Safety
The SQLite implementation uses a thread-local connection pattern to ensure thread safety across different execution contexts. It can operate using an on-disk database stored in the .ropeproject folder or an in-memory database shared across threads using a URI-based connection string. Search Logic
Search is performed using SQL LIKE queries, allowing for exact matches or prefix-based "import assist" suggestions. The search_full method combines results from three distinct lookups:
- Name Search: Finds names within modules (e.g.,
from os import path). - Module Search: Finds modules themselves (e.g.,
import os). - Alias Search: Finds modules using predefined aliases (e.g.,
import pandas as pd).

Import Management and Information
While the contrib.autoimport package handles the index, the rope.refactor.importutils package provides the logic for manipulating the resulting import statements.
Import Types
The subsystem distinguishes between two main types of import statements through the ImportInfo hierarchy:
- NormalImport: Represents standard
import moduleorimport module as aliasstatements. Sources: rope/refactor/importutils/importinfo.py:94-117 - FromImport: Represents
from module import namestatements, including support for relative imports and star imports. Sources: rope/refactor/importutils/importinfo.py:120-176
The AddingVisitor
When a new import is suggested by the Autoimport subsystem, the AddingVisitor in the import tools determines the best location and style for the new statement. It checks if the name is already imported or if it can be merged into an existing from ... import block. Cache Generation and Maintenance
Generating the name cache is a resource-intensive process that can be performed in parallel using a ProcessPoolExecutor.
Resource Scanning
The system scans project files and sys.path to identify modules. The get_files utility iterates through packages, identifying single files, compiled .so/.pyd modules, and standard Python directories. Sources: rope/contrib/autoimport/utils.py:102-125
def generate_cache(self, resources=None, underlined=False):
# Parallel processing of module names
with ProcessPoolExecutor() as executor:
for file in resources:
module = self._resource_to_module(file, underlined)
futures.append(executor.submit(get_names, module, self.project_package))
for future in as_completed(futures):
self._add_names(future.result())

Observation
To keep the cache accurate, the subsystem implements a ResourceObserver that listens for project changes:
_changed: Updates the index when a file is modified._moved: Removes the old module name and adds the new one._removed: Deletes names associated with the deleted file.

Summary
The Autoimport Subsystem provides a robust infrastructure for managing Python imports through intelligent indexing and automated refactoring tools. By utilizing both specialized search backends (SQLite) and sophisticated import manipulation logic (importutils), it enables features like automatic import suggestions and organization with high performance and technical accuracy.
