Understanding the Query Builder
Relevant source files
The following files were used as context for generating this wiki page:The Query Builder system is a core component of the "Search WhatsApp SQLite" feature. Its primary purpose is to dynamically construct and execute SQL queries against the user's uploaded msgstore.db file. This allows users to filter and search their chat history through a user-friendly web interface without needing to write SQL themselves. The system is composed of several parts: UI components for filter selection, a React hook for state management, a utility for SQL string construction, and a service for database interaction.
This system translates user selections from the SearchStep component into a precise SQL SELECT statement. The generated query joins multiple tables within the WhatsApp database schema to retrieve comprehensive message details, which are then used to generate analytics and display results.
Architecture and Data Flow
The query building and execution process involves a clear flow of data and control between several components, hooks, and services. The process begins with user interaction in the UI and ends with the display of filtered message data.
The following sequence diagram illustrates the interaction between the key components during a message search operation.
Core Components
useMessageSearch Hook
This React hook is the central controller for the search functionality. It manages the state of all search filters, triggers the query execution, and stores the results.
- State Management: It uses
useStateto hold values forstartDateSelected, endDateSelected, selectedMediaType, selectedMessagesDirection, andselectedChat. executeSearch()Function: This asynchronous function orchestrates the search. It callsbuildMessagesQueryto get the SQL string and then passes it to thedbService.executeQueryto get the results.

buildMessagesQuery Function
This is the heart of the query builder. It's a pure function that takes an object of filter criteria and constructs a complete SQL SELECT statement.
Input Parameters
The function accepts a single object with the following properties:
| Parameter | Type | Description | Source File |
|---|---|---|---|
startDate | String | The start of the date range in 'YYYY-MM-DD' format. | web/src/Pages/SearchSQLite/utils/queryBuilder.js:7 |
endDate | String | The end of the date range in 'YYYY-MM-DD' format. | web/src/Pages/SearchSQLite/utils/queryBuilder.js:8 |
selectedChat | String / null | The JID (user) of the selected chat, or null for all chats. | web/src/Pages/SearchSQLite/utils/queryBuilder.js:9 |
selectedMediaType | Array | An array of strings representing selected media types (e.g., 'image'). | web/src/Pages/SearchSQLite/utils/queryBuilder.js:10 |
selectedMessagesDirection | String | "All", "Sent", or "Received". | web/src/Pages/SearchSQLite/utils/queryBuilder.js:11 |
chatName | String | The display name of the chat, used in the SELECT clause. | web/src/Pages/SearchSQLite/utils/queryBuilder.js:12 |
Query Construction Logic
The function builds the query by dynamically creating an array of WHERE conditions based on the provided filters.
The following flowchart illustrates the logic for building the WHERE clause.
A key part of the media type filter is the MEDIA_TYPE_MAP constant, which translates user-friendly names into the integer codes stored in the database.

Database Schema and Joins
The query joins several tables to gather all the necessary information for each message.
The following diagram shows a simplified view of the tables involved and their relationships as used in the query.
The LEFT JOINs ensure that all messages are returned, even if they don't have associated media or other optional data.

Output Columns
The final SELECT statement is crafted to return a standardized set of columns.
| Column Name | Derivation - Description - |
| chatName | CASE statement on selectedChat - The name of the chat or 'All Chats'. - |
| fromMe | mssg.from_me - 1 if the message was sent by the user, 0 if received. - |
| dateTime | Strftime('%Y-%m-%d %H:%M:%S', mssg.timestamp / 1000.0, 'unixepoch') - The formatted timestamp of the message. - |
| type | CASE mssg.message_type WHEN ... - A string representation of the message type (e.g., 'text', 'image'). - |
| audioDuration | CASE WHEN mssg.message_type = 2 THEN mssg_md.media_duration END - The duration of an audio message in seconds, or null. - |
| star | mssg.starred - 1 if the message is starred, 0 otherwise. - |

DatabaseService
This service acts as a wrapper around the sql.js library.
initializeFromFile(): A static method that loads the.dbfile (as anArrayBuffer) and initializes thesql.jsdatabase instance.executeQuery(): This method takes the raw SQL string generated bybuildMessagesQuery, executes it against the database, and transforms the raw array-based result fromsql.jsinto a more usable array of objects, where each object represents a row and keys correspond to column names.

Conclusion
The Query Builder is a well-defined and modular system that effectively decouples the user interface from the database logic. By using a dedicated hook (useMessageSearch) for state management and a pure function (buildMessagesQuery) for SQL generation, the system is both maintainable and easy to understand. It dynamically constructs queries based on a variety of user-defined filters, providing a powerful and flexible search experience over the local WhatsApp database.
