Stream Views and Renderers constitute the interactive visual layer of the Plugsuits terminal user interface (TUI). This system is responsible for transforming raw asynchronous stream parts—received from AI models—into structured, styled, and human-readable components within the terminal. The architecture is built on the @mariozechner/pi-tui library, extending its base containers with specialized logic for handling real-time text generation, reasoning segments, and complex tool input/output cycles.
The primary goal of this module is to provide a deterministic and "surgical" rendering experience. It handles varied stream part types, such as text-delta, reasoning-delta, and tool-call, and manages their state transitions (e.g., from "pending/executing" to "completed"). Special emphasis is placed on "Pretty Rendering," which transforms raw JSON tool data into visually rich blocks, such as live diff previews for file edits or structured tables for file system explorations.

Architectural Overview
The rendering pipeline follows a dispatch-based pattern where a central stream handler identifies incoming TextStreamPart types and routes them to the appropriate view component.
Data Flow for Stream Parts
When a stream is processed, it flows through a renderer that maintains the state of active UI components (like assistant views and tool call blocks).
This diagram illustrates how raw stream data is dispatched to specialized view containers before being rendered to the terminal.

Core View Components
AssistantStreamView
The AssistantStreamView is a specialized container that manages the interleaved display of standard assistant text and internal reasoning (thinking) segments.
- State Management: It maintains an internal array of
AssistantStreamSegmentobjects. - Styling: It applies distinct ANSI styles to reasoning segments, typically using dim, italic, and gray formatting to distinguish them from final output.
- Normalization: It automatically strips leading newlines and trims segments to ensure a clean visual flow.

ToolCallView & BaseToolCallView
These components represent the lifecycle of a tool execution. They transition through several visual states:
| State | Visual Representation | Trigger |
|---|---|---|
| Input Streaming | Live JSON parsing or partial text | tool-input-delta |
| Pending | "Executing.." spinner | tool-input-end or tool-call |
| Success | Pretty-rendered result or formatted block | tool-result |
| Error | Red background with error details | tool-error |
| Denied | Policy restriction message | tool-output-denied |

Tool-Specific Renderers
A critical feature of the system is the ToolRendererMap, which allows for custom rendering logic based on the tool name. This prevents the TUI from being cluttered with raw JSON objects.
File Operation Renderers
read_file: Parses structured output to show file paths, line ranges, and a truncated preview of the content with line numbers.edit_file: Generates a "Live Diff Preview" using an LCS (Longest Common Subsequence) algorithm to show+and-changes before the edit is finalized.write_file: Displays a bounded preview of the content being written, limited to 200 lines or 100,000 characters for performance.
Exploration Renderers
glob_files: Summarizes file counts and lists matching paths, showing "no matches" or truncation markers as needed.grep_files: Displays matches including the specific line content and hashline anchors for surgical navigation.

Stream Dispatch Logic
The STREAM_HANDLERS object acts as the authoritative dispatch table. It maps TextStreamPart types to specific handler functions that manipulate the UI state.
This sequence shows the progression of a tool call from the initial start part to the final rendered result.

Stream Handling Table
| Part Type | Action | Component |
|---|---|---|
text-delta | Appends text | AssistantStreamView |
reasoning-delta | Appends styled reasoning | AssistantStreamView |
tool-input-delta | Buffers JSON and updates live preview | ToolCallView |
tool-call | Finalizes input and starts spinner | ToolCallView |
tool-result | Processes output via ToolRendererMap | ToolCallView |

Pretty Rendering Implementation
Pretty rendering is implemented by parsing the raw string output of tools. Many tools in Plugsuits use a "Numbered Block" format (e.g., starting with ======== and ending with ======== end ========).
Hashline Normalization
To ensure deterministic rendering, the system includes logic to normalize "hashline" break artifacts. If a stream chunk breaks a line between a tag (e.g., 42#AB) and its content, the renderer reconstructs the line to prevent visual flickering.
// Example of hashline artifact normalization
if (currentTagOnly && nextPipeOnly) {
const pipedContent = nextPipeOnly[1].trim();
normalized.push(`${currentTagOnly[1]}|${pipedContent}`);
}

Conclusion
The Stream Views & Renderers module provides the necessary abstraction to handle the complex, asynchronous nature of AI model streams. By separating the concern of stream parsing (stream-handlers.ts) from visual representation (stream-views.ts, tool-call-view.ts) and specific tool logic (tool-renderers.ts), the system ensures that the terminal interface remains responsive and informative throughout the agent's lifecycle.
