Bot Core & Initialization
Relevant source files

Red is a highly customizable and modular Discord bot built on the discord.py framework. The initialization process establishes the environment, validates requirements, and sets up the core event loop and extension management system.
The core architecture relies on a central Red bot class and a specialized Core cog that manages basic functions like cog loading, permission handling, and global settings. Initialization occurs in stages, beginning with environment validation and culminating in the on_ready event which prepares the bot for user interaction.
Environment & Prerequisites
Red requires specific environment configurations and Python versions to operate correctly. The system validates these requirements during the initial import and startup phase.
Python Version Requirements
The bot strictly requires Python 3.8.1 or higher. If a user attempts to run the bot on an older version, the system prints an error message and terminates with exit code 78.

Dependency Management
Red defines its entry points and dependencies in pyproject.toml. The primary CLI entry point is defined as redbot = "redbot.__main__:main".

Versioning System
The VersionInfo class manages Red's versioning, supporting various release levels:
- Alpha
- Beta
- Release Candidate
- Final

Initialization Sequence
The initialization sequence follows a structured path from connection to a fully ready state.
Startup Workflow
When the bot connects to Discord, the init_events function registers core handlers. The on_ready event serves as the primary initialization trigger for the internal state.
The on_ready Event
Upon connection, the bot performs the following actions:
- Calculates uptime from the current time.
- Generates an OAuth invite URL.
- Logs general information including prefixes, language, and version.
- Logs count metadata for shards, servers, and unique users.
- Fetches the latest version from PyPI to check for updates.

Core Extension & Cog Management
The CoreLogic and Core classes manage the lifecycle of extensions (cogs). This system allows for modularity without requiring bot restarts.
Cog Lifecycle Operations
The CoreLogic class implements RPC-registered handlers for managing extensions:
| Operation | Function | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Load | _load | Validates package names and attempts to load them via bot.load_extension. |
| Unload | _unload | Removes the extension from the bot and the loaded package list. |
| Reload | _reload | Executes an unload followed by a load, refreshing module code. |
| Refresh | _cleanup_and_refresh_modules | Internally reloads modules in sys.modules to detect code changes. |

Extension Loading Logic
During loading, Red performs validation to ensure stability:
- Checks if the package name is a valid Python identifier and not a keyword.
- Attempts to find the cog in registered cog paths.
- Handles
PackageAlreadyLoadedandCogLoadErrorexceptions. - Checks for deprecated shared libraries within the repository.

System Diagnostics & Metadata
Red provides detailed diagnostic tools to monitor the environment and bot state. These are exposed through the debuginfo command and the DebugInfo class.
Metadata Categories
The DebugInfo class organizes data into three primary sections:
- System Metadata: Details CPU cores, architecture, and RAM usage (Used/Total/Percent).
- OS Variables: Details OS version, Python executable path, and versions of Pip, Red, and
discord.py. - Red Variables: Details the instance name, command line arguments (with tokens expunged), global prefixes, and bot owners.

Initialization Error Handling
The bot manages various errors during the initialization and execution phases to maintain uptime.
Command Invocation Errors
If a command fails during execution, Red logs the exception to bot._last_exception and sends a user-friendly error message. Owners can use the traceback command to retrieve these details.

Common Initialization Failures
- Missing Permissions: Red detects if it lacks required permissions (e.g.,
embed_links) and informs the user. - Python Incompatibility: Termination occurs immediately if the runtime version is unsupported.
- Cog Conflicts: Red prevents loading cogs that attempt to register duplicate commands or aliases.

Initialization completes once the bot._red_ready internal event is set, enabling full command processing and periodic tasks.
