The Payments and Subscriptions system is a core component of the PRPM platform, designed to manage access to premium features, handle billing for services like the Playground, and support team-based usage through organizations. It provides a tiered access model, a credit-based system for metered features, and private package hosting for enterprise users. This system underpins the platform's sustainability by offering value-added services beyond the free, open-source package management capabilities.
The primary features managed by this system are PRPM+ subscriptions, Playground credits, and Organization accounts for private package management.

System Overview
The payment system integrates user accounts with different subscription tiers, each providing distinct levels of access and resource limits. It also manages a virtual currency (credits) for specific features like the AI model playground.
The following diagram illustrates the main components of the PRPM subscription and payment ecosystem.
Subscription Tiers
PRPM offers several tiers of service, primarily differentiated by API rate limits. These tiers cater to different usage levels, from individual developers to large enterprises.
| Tier | API Rate Limit (Requests/Minute) | API Rate Limit (Requests/Month) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 10 | 1,000 |
| Starter | 100 | 50,000 |
| Pro | 500 | 250,000 |
| Enterprise | Custom | Custom |

Playground Credits
Playground credits are a virtual currency used to interact with AI models in the PRPM Playground. This feature allows users to test packages with various AI models before installation.

Credit Allocation and Lifecycle
Users can acquire credits through several methods, as shown in the flow below.
This diagram shows the paths for a user to obtain and use Playground credits.

Using the Playground
Users can test packages in the playground via the CLI or the web application.
CLI Command:
# Test a package
prpm playground --package @vendor/pkg
# Compare a package across multiple models
prpm playground --package @vendor/pkg --compare
Verified authors have the additional capability to test packages with custom system prompts.
# Custom prompt testing for verified authors
prpm playground --custom-prompt "You are..." --compare

Organizations and Private Packages
PRPM provides features for teams and companies through "Organization" accounts. This is a premium feature that enables collaboration and control over proprietary AI assets.
- Private Namespace: Organizations get a unique namespace for their packages.
- Private Packages: Members can publish packages that are only accessible to other members of the organization.
- Team Management: Ability to invite and manage team members.
This feature allows companies to use PRPM's versioning and distribution infrastructure for their internal, proprietary prompts and rules.

Payment Policies
The Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) outlines strict rules regarding payments and financial conduct on the platform to prevent abuse.
Prohibited Activities
- Payment Fraud: Using stolen credit cards or engaging in chargeback fraud is strictly forbidden.
- Identity Fraud: Falsifying identity or credentials, or claiming false affiliations.
- Abuse of Free Trials: Creating multiple accounts to abuse free trials or sharing paid account access.
Violations of these policies can lead to enforcement actions, including warnings, temporary suspension, or permanent account termination.

Contributor Rewards
While not a direct payment mechanism, PRPM offers a rewards program for top contributors to the ecosystem. This serves as an incentive for creating high-quality, popular packages.
Rewards include:
- Verified badge on packages
- Featured author status
- Early access to new features
- Swag (stickers, shirts)

Summary
The Payments and Subscriptions system is integral to the PRPM platform, enabling a freemium model that supports both the open-source community and professional users. It provides revenue through PRPM+ subscriptions and organization accounts, funds metered resource usage like the Playground via a credit system, and enforces fair use through its API rate limits and AUP. This allows PRPM to offer a robust free tier for package management while providing advanced, paid features for power users and teams.
