Structured Reads & Pagination

Structured Reads & Pagination represent the core data retrieval architecture of the putio-cli. Designed for both human readability in terminal sessions and deterministic automation for agents, the system prioritizes machine-readable contracts via JSON and NDJSON. It handles large datasets through a cursor-based pagination system that supports both exhaustive collection and real-time streaming of pages.
The system ensures efficiency by allowing field selection, which minimizes the data payload transferred over the network and processed by the consumer. This is particularly critical for AI agents operating within constrained context windows.

Output Modes and Selection
The CLI supports three primary output modes, which are determined by the execution environment (interactive vs. non-interactive) or explicit user flags.
Output Mode Matrix
| Mode | Format | Use Case | Implementation |
|---|---|---|---|
text | Human-readable | Terminal TTY sessions | renderTerminal |
json | Single JSON object | Scripts, single-page reads | renderJson |
ndjson | Newline Delimited JSON | Large datasets, streaming | renderNdjson |

Detection Logic
The system automatically detects the appropriate output mode based on the environment. In interactive terminals, it defaults to text, whereas in non-interactive environments (pipes, CI), it defaults to json. Users can override this using the --output flag.
Pagination Architecture
The putio-cli utilizes a cursor-based pagination mechanism to manage large collections such as file lists, search results, and transfers.
Continuous Cursor Flow
The pagination logic is centralized in the writeReadPages and collectAllCursorPages functions. The process starts with an initial request that returns a cursor. If more data is required, the CLI performs follow-up calls using continue endpoints until the cursor is null.
Pagination Controls
The behavior of the pagination loop is governed by several configuration flags:
--per-page: Sets the number of items per request (default is usually 20).--page-all: Instructs the CLI to exhaustively fetch all pages before returning a single combined JSON array (requires structured output).- Safety Limits: To prevent infinite loops or excessive memory usage, the CLI enforces a
MAX_CURSOR_PAGESof 1,000 andMAX_CURSOR_ITEMSof 100,000.

Field Selection
Field selection allows users and agents to narrow down responses to specific top-level keys using the --fields flag.
Filtering Logic
When --fields is provided, the selectTopLevelFields function validates that the requested fields exist in the API response. If valid, it returns a filtered object containing only those keys. This is mandatory when using json or ndjson to keep payloads small for context-sensitive agents.
// Example from src/internal/command.ts
export const selectTopLevelFields = <A extends Record<string, unknown>>(input: {
readonly command: string;
readonly requestedFields: ReadonlyArray<string> | undefined;
readonly value: A;
}) =>
Effect.try({
try: () => {
if (input.requestedFields === undefined) return input.value;
// ... validation and filtering ...
return Object.fromEntries(input.requestedFields.map((field) => [field, input.value[field]]));
}
});

Data Safety and Sanitization
Structured reads include built-in safety mechanisms to protect the integrity of the consuming environment, particularly for AI agents.
Redaction and Untrusted Content
- Redaction: Sensitive keys like
auth_token,password, andtokenare automatically replaced with[REDACTED]in terminal and JSON outputs. - Untrusted Text: For fields containing user-provided text (like file names or notes), the CLI injects
_meta.agentSafetymetadata. This metadata warns agents to treat the content as data, not as instructions, to prevent prompt injection.

The structured read and pagination system provides a robust foundation for interacting with the put.io API. By combining cursor-based loops, strict field selection, and automated safety sanitization, the CLI ensures that both human users and automated agents can retrieve data reliably and securely.
