Third-Party Integrations

This document outlines the architecture and implementation of third-party service integrations within the Nota application. The project's core functionality relies on external services to fetch video data, process text with artificial intelligence, and render content. The primary integrations are with the YouTube ecosystem for transcript data and Google's Gemini API for AI-driven content generation.
The application is architected to have the frontend client interact directly with the Gemini API, while transcript fetching is proxied through a dedicated backend service to handle potential network restrictions and provide a layer of abstraction.
YouTube Data Integration
The application integrates with YouTube to fetch video transcripts, which form the basis for all subsequent AI processing. This is achieved through a combination of a frontend service and a backend API.
Architecture and Data Flow
The frontend does not directly request transcripts from YouTube. Instead, it calls a self-hosted Python backend API, which in turn uses the youtube-transcript-api library to retrieve the data. This architecture helps to centralize transcript fetching logic, manage potential IP blocking from YouTube, and implement features like rate-limiting and proxying.
The following sequence diagram illustrates the transcript fetching process.
Backend Transcript API
The backend is a Python application built with FastAPI. It exposes a single primary endpoint for fetching transcripts.
Sources: api/index.py
Endpoint: GET /api/transcript
This endpoint retrieves the raw transcript data for a given YouTube video ID.
| Parameter | Type | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
videoId | string | Yes | The 11-character YouTube Video ID. |
Sources: api/index.py:87
The backend includes several important features:
- Proxy Support: It can be configured with
WEBSHARE_USERandWEBSHARE_PASSenvironment variables to route requests through a Webshare proxy, which helps prevent IP-based blocking from YouTube. - Rate Limiting: A middleware limits requests to 15 per 60-second window per IP to prevent abuse.
- Security: Implements CORS for specific origins and adds security headers like
X-Content-Type-OptionsandX-Frame-Options. - Error Handling: Catches specific exceptions from the
youtube-transcript-apilibrary (e.g.,TranscriptsDisabled,NoTranscriptFound) and returns a404status. It also handles generic exceptions and potential blocks from YouTube, returning a403.

Frontend Service (YoutubeService)
The YoutubeService class in the frontend abstracts the interaction with the backend API.
extractVideoId(url): A static method that uses regular expressions to parse a video ID from various YouTube URL formats (e.g.,watch?v=,youtu.be/,embed/).fetchTranscript(videoId): Asynchronously calls the/api/transcriptbackend endpoint. It validates the video ID format before making the request and maps the raw response into theTranscriptSegmenttype used by the application.

Google Gemini AI Service
The application leverages the Google Gemini API for all its intelligent text processing features. This integration is handled entirely on the client side using the @google/genai SDK.

Architecture and Flow
When a user performs an action that requires AI processing (e.g., highlighting transcript text, generating content for the Smart Board), the frontend directly calls the Gemini API. The API key is managed via settingsService and stored in the browser's local storage.
This diagram shows the general flow for generating content like a Twitter thread.
Core AI Functions
The geminiService.ts file contains all the functions that interact with the Gemini API. Each function is tailored for a specific task by using a unique system instruction and configuration. All functions use the gemini-2.0-flash model.
| Function | Purpose | System Instruction Summary | Output Format |
|---|---|---|---|
cleanTranscriptText | Cleans a raw transcript snippet into a concise, grammatical sentence. | "You are an expert editor for video transcripts... transform... into a concise summary." | Plain Text |
generateTwitterThread | Converts a full transcript into a 7-10 tweet thread. | "You are a viral content creator for Twitter/X... convert... into a high-engagement thread." | Numbered List (Text) |
generateLinkedInPost | Creates a professional LinkedIn post from the transcript. | "You are a professional LinkedIn thought leader... Output EXACTLY in this JSON format." | JSON (LinkedInPost) |
generateBlogOutline | Generates an SEO-optimized blog post outline. | "You are an SEO content strategist... Output EXACTLY in this JSON format." | JSON (BlogOutline) |
generateKeyTakeaways | Extracts 5-7 actionable key takeaways. | "You are a learning assistant... Output EXACTLY in this JSON format." | JSON (KeyTakeaway[]) |
validateApiKey | Checks if a given API key is valid by making a small test call. | N/A (sends "test" content) | Boolean |

AI-Generated Data Structures
The Gemini API is prompted to return structured JSON for several features. These structures are defined in types.ts.
This diagram shows the relationships between the content types generated by the AI.

Other Third-Party Integrations
The application utilizes several other third-party libraries and services that are integral to its functionality and development.

Google Text-to-Speech API
A Python script, generate_vo.py, uses the Google Text-to-Speech API to generate a voiceover MP3 file (nota_voiceover.mp3) for marketing assets. This is a development-time integration rather than a runtime user-facing one. It uses the en-US-Studio-M voice.
