TypeScript and Supabase Types

The ElmecV2 project leverages TypeScript to provide static typing for Supabase database interactions, aiming to ensure data consistency and improve developer experience. The system uses a combination of auto-generated types from the Supabase schema and manually crafted helper types to model database entities and their relationships.
However, analysis reveals a significant drift between the TypeScript types expected by the application code and the actual database schema deployed in Supabase. Several key tables, including requests and messages, are missing columns that are critical for core application features like file attachments, message replies, and user feedback. This discrepancy leads to runtime errors and blocked functionality. This document outlines the intended type structure, the identified schema gaps, and the necessary SQL migrations to resolve these issues.

Core Database Schema and Type Definitions
The application's data model is centered around several key tables in the public schema of Supabase. The TypeScript types are designed to mirror these structures.
This diagram shows the entity relationships between the main tables as expected by the application logic.
Type Generation and Augmentation
The project's typing strategy involves both automated generation and manual extension to create comprehensive and usable types for the application.
This flowchart illustrates the process of generating and augmenting Supabase types.

types/supabase.ts: This file is intended to hold the raw types generated by the Supabase CLI. It defines the basicTable,Row,Insert, andUpdatetypes for each table in the database.types/supabase-helpers.ts: This file likely contains manually defined types that combine the generated types to represent more complex data structures, such as aRequestobject that includes the fullUserobject for itsusuario_id.types/supabase-override.d.ts: This declaration file can be used to override or extend existing types globally if needed.
The validation reports recommend running npx supabase gen types typescript to regenerate the base types, which would help align the code with the current database schema but would not solve the underlying problem of missing columns.

Schema Discrepancies and Required Fixes
The primary issue with the current implementation is the mismatch between the database schema and the application's data access layer. Multiple reports confirm that critical columns are missing from the requests and messages tables.
This diagram shows the workflow for identifying and fixing a schema mismatch.
Missing Columns in requests Table
The requests table is missing columns required for handling file attachments and user feedback. This blocks core functionality in the requests module.

| Missing Column | Expected Type | Description | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
archivos | TEXT[] | Array of URLs for files uploaded to Supabase Storage. | 🔴 Critical |
feedback | TEXT | User-submitted comments on the resolution of a request. | 🔴 Medium |
rating | INTEGER | A 1-5 star rating provided by the user. | 🔴 Medium |
SQL Script to Fix requests Table:
The following SQL script should be executed in the Supabase SQL Editor to add the missing columns and constraints.
-- Add missing columns to the requests table
ALTER TABLE requests
ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS archivos TEXT[] DEFAULT NULL,
ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS feedback TEXT DEFAULT NULL,
ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS rating INTEGER DEFAULT NULL;
-- Add constraint for rating
ALTER TABLE requests
ADD CONSTRAINT check_rating_range
CHECK (rating IS NULL OR (rating >= 1 AND rating <= 5));
-- Add comments for documentation
COMMENT ON COLUMN requests.archivos IS 'Array de URLs públicas de archivos adjuntos desde Supabase Storage';
COMMENT ON COLUMN requests.feedback IS 'Comentarios del usuario sobre la resolución de la solicitud';
COMMENT ON COLUMN requests.rating IS 'Calificación de 1 a 5 estrellas sobre la resolución';

Missing Columns in messages Table
The messages table is missing numerous columns, severely limiting the chat module's functionality and preventing it from behaving like a modern messaging application (e.g., WhatsApp). Features like replies, file metadata, audio messages, editing, and read receipts are all blocked.

| Missing Column | Expected Type | Description | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
reply_to | UUID | Foreign key to the messages(id) being replied to. | 🔴 Critical |
file_name | TEXT | The original name of an attached file. | 🔴 Critical |
file_size | INTEGER | The size of the attached file in bytes. | 🟡 High |
audio_duration | INTEGER | The duration of a voice message in seconds. | 🔴 Critical |
edited_at | TIMESTAMP | Timestamp indicating when the message was last edited. | 🟡 High |
read_by | JSONB | A JSON object tracking which users have read the message. | 🟡 High |
SQL Script to Fix messages Table:
This comprehensive script adds all missing columns, creates necessary indexes, and adds comments for documentation.
-- 1. Add column reply_to (for replying to messages)
ALTER TABLE messages
ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS reply_to UUID REFERENCES messages(id) ON DELETE SET NULL;
-- 2. Add columns for file attachments
ALTER TABLE messages
ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS file_name TEXT DEFAULT NULL,
ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS file_size INTEGER DEFAULT NULL;
-- 3. Add column for audio duration
ALTER TABLE messages
ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS audio_duration INTEGER DEFAULT NULL;
-- 4. Add column to track edits
ALTER TABLE messages
ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS edited_at TIMESTAMP DEFAULT NULL;
-- 5. Add column read_by (for read tracking)
ALTER TABLE messages
ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS read_by JSONB DEFAULT '{}'::jsonb;
-- 6. Create indexes for performance
CREATE INDEX IF NOT EXISTS idx_messages_reply_to ON messages(reply_to);
CREATE INDEX IF NOT EXISTS idx_messages_edited_at ON messages(edited_at DESC) WHERE edited_at IS NOT NULL;

Conclusion
The TypeScript and Supabase type system in ElmecV2 is well-intentioned but currently flawed due to a significant schema drift between the application code and the live database. While the structure for type generation and augmentation is in place, its effectiveness is undermined by the missing database columns. Applying the provided SQL migration scripts is the critical next step to unblock key features, resolve runtime errors, and bring the database schema in line with the application's typed data models. Once the schema is corrected, regenerating the Supabase types will ensure end-to-end type safety.
