Testing Strategy

TrackerBot employs a testing strategy focused on environment validation, syntax integrity, and behavioral verification of key handlers. The strategy ensures that both the Discord bot (bot.js) and the issue intake web server (webserver.js) are configured correctly and that critical security features, such as the honeypot mechanism, operate as intended under various conditions.
The testing suite is built on the native Node.js test runner, utilizing node --test for execution. This approach minimizes external dependencies while providing robust validation for ESM-based modules.

Testing Infrastructure and Execution
The project utilizes the built-in Node.js testing capabilities available in Node.js 18+. Tests are located in the test/ directory and are executed via a standard npm script.
Continuous Integration (CI) Flow
The CI pipeline, defined in .github/workflows/ci.yml, follows a specific sequence to ensure code quality before deployment:
- Installation: Execution of
npm cito install dependencies. - Syntax Check: A sweep of all JavaScript files using
node --checkto catch syntax errors. - Unit Testing: Execution of the test suite via
npm test.

Verification Commands
| Command | Description |
|---|---|
npm test | Runs all files in the test/ directory using the Node.js test runner. |
node --check <file> | Performs a syntax check on specific entry points without executing code. |
| `find . -name "*.js" ... | node --check` |

Environment Validation Strategy
A core component of the testing strategy is the verification of environment variables. Since the bot depends heavily on Discord Role IDs and Channel IDs, src/config/env.js centrally validates these requirements. The tests in test/env.test.js verify that:
- Required variables (e.g.,
DISCORD_TOKEN,WELCOME_CHANNEL_ID) throw errors if missing. - The
getRequiredEnvhelper correctly retrieves set values. - The
ensureEnvVarsfunction successfully validates a complete environment configuration.

The use of dynamic imports with a timestamp query parameter (?t=Date.now()) allows the test runner to re-evaluate modules for every test case, ensuring that process.env changes are respected without module caching interference.

Functional Component Testing
Honeypot Security Testing
The honeypot mechanism is a critical anti-spam feature. Testing in test/honeypot.test.js focuses on:
- Initialization: Ensuring no listeners are registered if
HONEYPOT_CHANNEL_IDis missing. - Permission Enforcement: Verifying that members with admin roles are exempt from honeypot punishment.
- Fault Tolerance: Ensuring the system "fails safe" (does not punish) if member resolution or role checks fail due to API errors.

Destructive Command Safeties
Commands that modify channel structures, such as /nuke, are tested to ensure they correctly identify dependencies. test/nuke.test.js validates the getAffectedBotFeatures logic, which prevents administrators from accidentally breaking bot functionality (like welcome messages) when recreating channels.

Mocking and Simulation
Because the bot interacts with the Discord API, tests use "Fake Client" objects to simulate the discord.js Client behavior. This allows the suite to verify that event listeners (like messageCreate or clientReady) are registered using the correct frequency (on vs once).
Summary
The TrackerBot testing strategy prioritizes system stability through rigorous environment checks and unit testing of security-sensitive handlers. By combining Node.js native testing with dynamic module loading and mock objects, the project ensures that deployment configurations are valid and that automated moderation features behave predictably.
