The LobeChat application features a flexible authentication system that can be configured to use different providers, primarily Clerk and NextAuth. The choice of provider and its configuration are managed through environment variables, which are centralized in a dedicated configuration file. This design allows for easy switching between authentication strategies and isolates custom logic from the core LobeChat codebase, simplifying upstream synchronization.
The system is designed around dedicated login and signup pages (/login, /signup) rather than floating modals, providing a standard and non-intrusive user experience. User data between the authentication provider and the application's database is synchronized via webhooks, ensuring data consistency.

Core Configuration
Authentication behavior is primarily controlled by the AUTH_CONFIG object defined in src/config/customizations.ts. This object sources its values from environment variables, allowing for easy configuration without code changes.

Configuration Options
The following table details the options available in the AUTH_CONFIG object.
| Parameter | Environment Variable | Description | Default |
|---|---|---|---|
provider | NEXT_PUBLIC_AUTH_PROVIDER | Selects the authentication provider. | 'clerk' |
clerk.enabled | NEXT_PUBLIC_ENABLE_CLERK_AUTH or NEXT_PUBLIC_CLERK_PUBLISHABLE_KEY | Enables Clerk authentication. Auto-enabled if NEXT_PUBLIC_CLERK_PUBLISHABLE_KEY is set. | false |
clerk.publishableKey | NEXT_PUBLIC_CLERK_PUBLISHABLE_KEY | The public-facing key for the Clerk frontend. | undefined |
clerk.secretKey | CLERK_SECRET_KEY | The secret key for Clerk backend operations. | undefined |
clerk.webhookSecret | CLERK_WEBHOOK_SECRET | The secret used to verify incoming webhooks from Clerk. | undefined |
nextAuth.enabled | NEXT_PUBLIC_ENABLE_NEXT_AUTH | Enables NextAuth authentication. | false |
enableAuthProtection | ENABLE_AUTH_PROTECTION | If set to '1', enables authentication protection for routes. | false |
devImpersonateUser | CLERK_DEV_IMPERSONATE_USER | Maps a user ID for development purposes. | undefined |

Configuration Validation
The system includes a validation function, validateCustomizationConfig, which checks for the presence of required environment variables at startup. If Clerk is enabled, it ensures that NEXT_PUBLIC_CLERK_PUBLISHABLE_KEY and CLERK_SECRET_KEY are set. This prevents runtime errors due to misconfiguration.

Authentication Providers
The application supports two main authentication providers: Clerk and NextAuth.
Clerk Integration
When AUTH_CONFIG.provider is set to 'clerk', the application uses Clerk for user management. A key part of this integration is the use of webhooks to synchronize user data between Clerk and the application's local database.
Clerk Webhook Handler
The application exposes an API endpoint at /api/webhooks/clerk to receive user-related events from Clerk. This endpoint is secured by verifying the request signature using the CLERK_WEBHOOK_SECRET.
The handler processes the following events:
user.created: Creates a new user in the local database.user.updated: Updates an existing user's information.user.deleted: Deletes a user from the local database.
This ensures that the application's user table remains consistent with the user data in Clerk.
The diagram below illustrates the Clerk webhook flow for user creation.
Common Clerk Issues & Fixes
A common issue with Clerk integration is the failure to redirect users after a successful sign-up or sign-in, often caused by missing redirect URLs in the Clerk configuration. The ClerkProvider and the <SignUp>/<SignIn> components must have afterSignUpUrl and afterSignInUrl props set, typically to /.

NextAuth Integration
When AUTH_CONFIG.provider is set to 'next-auth', the application uses the NextAuth.js library. This integration is highly modular, allowing for the dynamic inclusion of various Single Sign-On (SSO) providers.
NextAuth Configuration
The core NextAuth configuration is located in src/libs/next-auth/auth.config.ts. It dynamically constructs the list of authentication providers based on environment variables.
The authOptions object configures:
- Providers: An array of SSO providers, built by the
getProvidersfunction. - Callbacks: Functions to handle JWT and session events, such as populating the session with the user's ID.
- Pages: Specifies custom pages for sign-in, though the default is used if not provided.
The following diagram shows how the NextAuth configuration is assembled.
This diagram illustrates the flow from defining SSO providers to their inclusion in the final NextAuth handler.

SSO Providers
The available SSO providers are defined in src/libs/next-auth/sso-providers/index.ts. Each provider is enabled by setting its corresponding _CLIENT_ID and _CLIENT_SECRET environment variables.
Supported providers include:
- Auth0
- Azure AD
- GitHub
- OIDC
- ZITADEL
The getProviders function filters this list to include only those that have been correctly configured with environment variables.

OIDC Provider
The application includes a generic OIDC (OpenID Connect) endpoint at /app/(backend)/oidc/[...oidc]/route.ts. This route handler is responsible for managing the OIDC authentication flow, including handling callbacks and user information exchange with an OIDC-compliant identity provider. It uses the oidc-provider library to create and manage an OIDC provider instance.

Summary
LobeChat's authentication system is designed for flexibility and ease of configuration. By leveraging environment variables, it allows developers to seamlessly switch between Clerk and a custom NextAuth setup with multiple SSO providers. The use of webhooks for data synchronization with Clerk and a modular approach for NextAuth providers makes the system robust and extensible. Proper configuration, especially of environment variables and redirect URLs, is critical for the system to function correctly.
