AI Provider Integration

The AI Provider Integration system manages connections to various Artificial Intelligence services to generate chat summaries and perform message analysis. It abstracts specific vendor implementation details behind a unified interface, allowing the bot to switch between Cloudflare Workers AI, OpenAI, and other supported providers through configuration changes.
This system handles request formatting, credential management, model-specific parameter tuning, and error normalization across different AI backend services.

Architecture Overview
The system utilizes a Factory pattern to instantiate specific provider classes based on environment variables. Each provider implements a common interface that accepts a SummaryRequest and SummaryOptions to return a string-based result.
Provider Selection Logic
The ProviderFactory determines the active provider by checking specific environment variables. It prioritizes capability-specific variables (e.g., PROFANITY_PROVIDER) before falling back to the general SUMMARY_PROVIDER. If no provider is specified, it defaults to cloudflare.
Supported Providers
The system currently supports several distinct AI backends:
| Provider Name | Class Name | Description |
|---|---|---|
cloudflare | CloudflareAIProvider | Uses Cloudflare Workers AI (env.AI) binding. |
openai | OpenAIProvider | Uses standard OpenAI Chat Completions API. |
openai-premium | OpenAIProvider | Uses OpenAI with separate premium configuration keys. |
openrouter | OpenRouterProvider | Connects via the OpenRouter API aggregator. |
legal-rag | LegalRagProvider | Specialized provider for criminal code analysis. |

Provider Implementations
Cloudflare Workers AI
The CloudflareAIProvider interacts with models hosted on Cloudflare's edge. It differentiates between "chat" models and "completion" models based on the SUMMARY_MODEL string. If the model name contains "chat", it formats the input as a messages array; otherwise, it uses a single string prompt.

OpenAI Service
The OpenAIProvider supports standard GPT models and the newer GPT-5 series. For legacy models (GPT-3.5, GPT-4), it uses the /v1/chat/completions endpoint and max_tokens. For GPT-5 models (e.g., gpt-5-nano), it utilizes the /v1/responses API and maps the token limit to max_output_tokens.
Data Structures and Options
The integration uses standardized objects to pass data to providers:
SummaryRequest
Contains the raw material and instructions for the AI.
messages: Array ofTelegramMessageobjects (username, text, timestamp).systemPrompt: Directions for the AI behavior.userPrompt: Specific instructions for the current summary.limitNote: Constraints on output length (e.g., "Keep under 4096 characters").
SummaryOptions
Configures the generation parameters.
maxTokens: The maximum length of the generated response.temperature: Controls randomness (usually 0.0 to 1.0).topP: Nucleus sampling threshold.frequencyPenalty: Discourages word repetition.

Configuration and Defaults
The behavior is controlled via environment variables. The system attempts to find provider-specific overrides before falling back to global summary settings.
| Parameter | Cloudflare Variable | OpenAI Variable | Default (Fallback) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Max Tokens | CLOUDFLARE_MAX_TOKENS | OPENAI_MAX_TOKENS | SUMMARY_MAX_TOKENS |
| Temperature | CLOUDFLARE_TEMPERATURE | OPENAI_TEMPERATURE | SUMMARY_TEMPERATURE |
| Top P | CLOUDFLARE_TOP_P | OPENAI_TOP_P | SUMMARY_TOP_P |

Error Handling
Providers are responsible for validating their own configuration (e.g., checking if OPENAI_API_KEY exists) and throwing a ProviderError when external requests fail.
Common normalized error scenarios:
- Rate Limits: Detected via HTTP 429 or specific vendor error messages.
- Timeouts: Occur when the AI service takes too long to respond to large requests.
- Authentication: Thrown when API keys are invalid or missing.

Summary
The AI Provider Integration provides a flexible, factory-based architecture for consuming LLM services. By abstracting vendor-specific APIs into a unified provider interface, the project maintains compatibility across Cloudflare Workers AI and OpenAI while allowing for specialized logic such as GPT-5 specific API handling and model-based input formatting.
