This document outlines the architectural requirements and implementation strategy for extending the existing Calculator application with scientific functions. Currently, the system supports basic arithmetic, sign toggling, and percentage calculations. Expanding into scientific functionality requires integrating advanced mathematical operations into the core computation engine and UI grid.
The application utilizes a single-file architecture where logic, styling, and structure are contained within calculator.html. Adding scientific functions involves modifying the internal state machine and the compute function to handle unary and binary operations beyond standard arithmetic.
Core State and Logic Integration
The calculator operates using a state-driven approach to manage user inputs and calculations. To add scientific functions, the existing state variables must be leveraged or extended to handle more complex mathematical contexts.
Current Calculation State
The calculation logic relies on four primary state variables:
current: A string representing the value currently being entered or the result of the last operation.previous: A string storing the first operand of a binary operation.operator: A variable storing the pending binary operator (e.g., +, -, ×, ÷).shouldReset: A boolean flag indicating if the display should clear upon the next digit entry.

Extending the Compute Function
The compute(a, b, op) function is the primary engine for mathematical results. Scientific functions would be integrated here, either as new cases in the switch statement for binary operations (like power) or as a separate handler for unary functions (like sin, cos, tan, or log).
The logic currently uses a precision rounding helper to maintain accuracy up to 12 decimal places.

UI and Interaction Layer
Adding scientific functions requires modifying the CSS Grid layout and the event delegation system to accommodate new buttons.
Button Grid Expansion
The UI uses a CSS Grid with four columns. Scientific functions would likely require an expansion to a five-column layout or a toggleable "Scientific" mode.
| Element Class | Current Purpose | Potential Scientific Extension |
|---|---|---|
.btn-fn | Top row functions (AC, +/-, %) | Unary functions (sin, log, sqrt) |
.btn-op | Arithmetic operators (+, -, ×, ÷) | Binary functions (x^y, mod) |
.btn-grid | 4-column layout container | Expanded grid or secondary panel |

Event Delegation
The system uses a single event listener on the .btn-grid container to capture clicks. New scientific actions would be identified via the data-action and data-val or data-op attributes.

Input Handling and Validation
Scientific functions introduce specific input requirements, such as handling negative inputs for square roots or zero for logarithms.
Validation Rules
- Error Handling: The system currently handles division by zero by returning "Error". A similar pattern must be applied to scientific functions (e.g.,
sqrt(-1)). - String Length: The input logic limits digit entry to 14 characters to prevent display overflow. Scientific results often require scientific notation, which is already partially implemented in the
formatNumhelper.
| Function | Current Implementation | Requirement for Scientific |
|---|---|---|
formatNum | Handles exponential for results >= 1e12 | Must handle very small results from scientific trig |
inputDigit | Limits length to 14 | Remains same for user input |
updateExpr | Shows "a op b" | Should show "fn(a)" for unary scientific |

Implementation Summary
Integrating scientific functions into the Calculator requires:
- Logic Expansion: Adding
Mathobject methods (e.g.,Math.sin,Math.pow) to thecomputefunction. - UI Modification: Adjusting the
.btn-gridincalculator.htmlto include new interactive elements. - State Management: Ensuring that
shouldResetis correctly toggled after a scientific operation to allow for subsequent calculations. - History Integration: Ensuring the
addHistoryfunction captures complex scientific expressions for the history list.
