Project and App Structure
Relevant source files
The following files were used as context for generating this wiki page:The django-locallibrary-tutorial project follows a standard Django architecture, separating the project-level configuration from the application-level business logic. The project is composed of a main project directory, locallibrary, which handles global settings and URL routing, and a primary application, catalog, which encapsulates all the features related to the library's catalog, such as models, views, and templates for books and authors.
This structure promotes modularity and reusability, adhering to Django's "Don't Repeat Yourself" (DRY) principle. The catalog app is self-contained, making it theoretically portable to other Django projects. The project also integrates with Django's built-in authentication system and admin site, which are configured in the main locallibrary directory.
Directory and File Overview
The project is organized into two main directories: locallibrary (the project) and catalog (the app).
This diagram illustrates the high-level directory structure and key files within the project.

Key Files and Their Purpose
| File Path | Description |
|---|---|
manage.py | A command-line utility for interacting with the Django project (e.g., running the server, creating migrations). |
locallibrary/settings.py | Contains all project-level configurations, including database, installed apps, and middleware. |
locallibrary/urls.py | The root URL configuration. It routes incoming requests to the appropriate app's URL configuration (catalog.urls) or view. |
catalog/models.py | Defines the database schema through Django ORM models (Book, Author, etc.). |
catalog/views.py | Contains the business logic to handle web requests and return responses. |
catalog/urls.py | Defines the URL patterns specific to the catalog application. |
catalog/admin.py | Registers models with the Django admin site, allowing for easy data management. |
templates/base_generic.html | The main base template from which all other pages inherit their basic structure. |
Project Configuration (locallibrary)
The locallibrary directory serves as the main entry point and configuration hub for the entire web application.
Settings (settings.py)
This file configures the core aspects of the project. The catalog app is registered in INSTALLED_APPS to be included in the project.
# locallibrary/settings.py:53-59
INSTALLED_APPS = [
'django.contrib.admin',
'django.contrib.auth',
'django.contrib.contenttypes',
'django.contrib.sessions',
'django.contrib.messages',
'django.contrib.staticfiles',
# Add our new application
'catalog.apps.CatalogConfig', # This object was created for us in /catalog/apps.py
]
The TEMPLATES setting is configured to look for templates in a project-level templates directory, which allows for overriding app templates and storing base templates. The database is configured to use sqlite3 by default.

Root URL Configuration (urls.py)
The main urls.py file is responsible for routing incoming HTTP requests. It includes URL patterns from other applications, primarily the catalog app and Django's built-in authentication system. The root path / is redirected to /catalog/.
# locallibrary/urls.py:28-30
urlpatterns += [
path('catalog/', include('catalog.urls')),
]
# locallibrary/urls.py:40-42
urlpatterns += [
path('', RedirectView.as_view(url='/catalog/', permanent=True)),
]
# locallibrary/urls.py:47-49
urlpatterns += [
path('accounts/', include('django.contrib.auth.urls')),
]

Catalog Application (catalog)
The catalog app contains all the functionality for the library catalog itself.
Data Models (models.py)
The data structure is defined in catalog/models.py using Django's ORM. The core models are Book, Author, BookInstance, Genre, and Language.
The following Entity-Relationship diagram shows the relationships between the models.
Diagram based on relationships defined in catalog/models.py
Key Model Fields
Book Model
| Field | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
title | CharField | The title of the book. |
author | ForeignKey | A one-to-many relationship to the Author model. |
summary | TextField | A brief description of the book. |
isbn | CharField | The unique 13-character ISBN. |
genre | ManyToManyField | A many-to-many relationship to the Genre model. |
language | ForeignKey | A one-to-many relationship to the Language model. |

BookInstance Model
| Field | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
id | UUIDField | A unique ID for this specific copy of the book (Primary Key). |
book | ForeignKey | A one-to-many relationship to the Book model. |
due_back | DateField | The date the book is due to be returned. |
borrower | ForeignKey | A relationship to the user who has borrowed the book. |
status | CharField | The availability status of the book (e.g., 'On loan', 'Available'). |

Views and Request Handling (views.py)
The catalog/views.py file defines the logic that handles requests and returns responses. It uses both function-based views and class-based generic views.
The general request-response flow is as follows:
- Function-Based View: The
indexview calculates counts of various objects and tracks user visits using the session framework.
Sources: catalog/views.py:8-26 - Class-Based Views (CBVs): The project extensively uses generic CBVs like
ListViewandDetailViewto display lists and details of models likeBookandAuthor. This reduces boilerplate code.
Sources: catalog/views.py:31-59 - Mixins: Security is handled using mixins like
LoginRequiredMixinandPermissionRequiredMixinto restrict access to certain views, such asLoanedBooksByUserListViewandAuthorCreate.
Sources: catalog/views.py:81-89, 143-147
Application URLs (urls.py)
The catalog/urls.py file maps URL patterns to the views defined in catalog/views.py. It defines paths for listing and detailing all models, as well as paths for creating, updating, and deleting them.
| URL Pattern | View | Name |
|---|---|---|
books/ | views.BookListView.as_view() | books |
book/<int:pk> | views.BookDetailView.as_view() | book-detail |
authors/ | views.AuthorListView.as_view() | authors |
author/<int:pk> | views.AuthorDetailView.as_view() | author-detail |
mybooks/ | views.LoanedBooksByUserListView.as_view() | my-borrowed |
book/<uuid:pk>/renew/ | views.renew_book_librarian | renew-book-librarian |
author/create/ | views.AuthorCreate.as_view() | author-create |

Templates
The project uses Django's template engine to generate HTML. A base template, base_generic.html, defines the common layout, including the navigation sidebar and content block. Other templates extend this base template.
This diagram shows the template inheritance structure.
The base template includes navigation links, user authentication status, and staff-specific links for content creation. It uses template tags like {% url %} for robust URL linking and {% if user.is_authenticated %} for conditional rendering.
