The Jurassic engine compiles JavaScript code directly into .NET Intermediate Language (IL) bytecode, rather than interpreting it. This Just-In-Time (JIT) compilation approach results in significantly higher performance for executed code. The core of this process involves parsing the JavaScript source into an Abstract Syntax Tree (AST), optimizing it, and then traversing the tree to emit IL instructions.
The IL generation is orchestrated by MethodGenerator subclasses, which manage the overall compilation unit (e.g., a global script or a function). These generators use an ILGenerator to emit the actual CIL instructions into a System.Reflection.Emit.DynamicMethod. A key helper class, OptimizationInfo, carries state and optimization hints throughout the recursive generation process.

Core Architecture
The IL generation process is driven by the abstract MethodGenerator class and its concrete implementations, such as FunctionMethodGenerator and GlobalOrEvalMethodGenerator. The MethodGenerator defines the high-level compilation pipeline.

Compilation Pipeline
The GenerateCode() method in MethodGenerator orchestrates the entire process. It ensures that parsing and optimization have occurred, then sets up the necessary components to emit IL.
The following diagram illustrates the compilation flow within a MethodGenerator.
This diagram shows the sequence of operations within the MethodGenerator.GenerateCode method, from parsing to final delegate creation.

ILGenerator Abstraction
To support different IL emission strategies and debugging features, Jurassic uses an ILGenerator abstract class. This provides a wrapper around the low-level IL-emitting APIs and allows for decorators to be added for logging and verification.

Implementations
The MethodGenerator can select or wrap different ILGenerator implementations based on compiler options and build configurations.
| Implementation | Purpose |
|---|---|
ReflectionEmitILGenerator | The standard implementation that uses System.Reflection.Emit.ILGenerator. |
DynamicILGenerator | An alternative implementation that writes directly to a byte array. Used when USE_DYNAMIC_IL_INFO is defined. It provides more control over the raw IL bytes and metadata tokens. |
LoggingILGenerator | A decorator that wraps another ILGenerator to produce a human-readable disassembly of the generated IL. Enabled by CompilerOptions.EnableILAnalysis. |
VerifyingILGenerator | A decorator used in DEBUG builds to verify stack correctness and type safety at each step of IL generation, throwing exceptions on mismatches. |

State and Optimization Management
The OptimizationInfo class is a critical component that is passed through the recursive GenerateCode calls on the AST. It holds all the contextual information needed to correctly generate IL, manage control flow, and apply optimizations.

Key Properties
The class manages state related to various language features:
| Property | Description |
|---|---|
StrictMode | Indicates if the current context is in strict mode. |
MethodOptimizationHints | Contains analysis results about the function, e.g., whether it uses eval, with, or arguments. |
ReturnTarget / ReturnVariable | Manages the ILLabel for the function's return point and the ILLocalVariable for storing the return value. |
breakOrContinueStack | A stack of BreakOrContinueInfo objects to manage break and continue statements within nested loops and labeled statements. |
InsideTryCatchOrFinally | A flag indicating if code is being generated inside an exception handling block. |
LongJumpCallback | A delegate used to handle non-local jumps (e.g., a break from within a finally block). |
| Variable Caches | Dictionaries like globalVariables and regularExpressionVariables to reuse local variables for frequently accessed items. |

Control Flow Management
OptimizationInfo provides a robust mechanism for handling control flow statements like break and continue, even across complex constructs like try-finally blocks.
- Loops and Labels: The
PushBreakOrContinueInfoandPopBreakOrContinueInfomethods manage a stack of valid jump targets. When abreakorcontinuestatement is encountered,GetBreakTargetorGetContinueTargetis called to find the correctILLabelto jump to.
Sources: Jurassic/Compiler/Emit/OptimizationInfo.cs:208-316 - Exception Handling Jumps: Standard IL does not allow an unconditional branch out of a
finallyblock. TheEmitLongJumpmethod abstracts this by usinggenerator.Leave()if inside atry/catchblock or a specialLongJumpCallbackif inside afinallyblock to correctly exit the protected region.

Generating Code for Language Constructs
Each node in the Abstract Syntax Tree is responsible for generating its own IL by calling methods on the provided ILGenerator.
Function Generation
Generating code for a function is a multi-step process handled by FunctionExpression and FunctionMethodGenerator.
The following sequence diagram shows how a function expression is compiled.
This diagram shows the process where a FunctionExpression triggers its FunctionMethodGenerator to compile itself, resulting in IL that constructs a UserDefinedFunction instance at runtime.
Sources: Jurassic/Compiler/Expressions/FunctionExpression.cs:68-125, Jurassic/Compiler/MethodGenerator/FunctionMethodGenerator.cs
The FunctionMethodGenerator itself generates the IL for the function's body. This includes:
- Creating and initializing the function's scope.
- Setting up the
argumentsobject if needed. - Copying passed argument values into their respective local variables or scope slots, handling default values.
- Generating code for hoisted variable and function declarations.
- Recursively calling
GenerateCodeon the statements in the function body. - Handling the final return value.

Statement Generation
Statements like if, for, while, and with are responsible for generating the control flow logic using branching instructions and labels.
For example, an IfStatement generates the following logic:
- Generate code for the
Conditionexpression. - Convert the result to a boolean.
- Use
BranchIfFalseto jump to theelseclause or the end of the statement. - Generate code for the
IfClause. - If an
ElseClauseexists, emit aBranchto skip it. - Define the label for the
ElseClauseand generate its code. - Define the final label for the end of the statement.

Conclusion
The IL code generation system is a cornerstone of Jurassic's performance. By compiling JavaScript to .NET bytecode, it leverages the full power of the CLR's JIT compiler. The architecture is highly modular, with a clear separation of concerns between the compilation pipeline (MethodGenerator), the low-level instruction emission (ILGenerator), and the state management (OptimizationInfo). This design not only enables high performance but also supports advanced features like detailed IL analysis and runtime verification through its decorator-based ILGenerator implementations.
