Security Features & Best Practices
Relevant source files
The following files were used as context for generating this wiki page:The DevSkyy platform is built with an enterprise-grade, multi-layered security architecture designed to protect data, prevent unauthorized access, and ensure system integrity. The security model is compliant with industry standards such as RFC 7519 (JWT) and NIST SP 800-38D (Encryption), and is designed to be ready for SOC2, GDPR, and PCI-DSS compliance.
This document outlines the key security features, configurations, and best practices implemented across the platform. The core principles include defense-in-depth, fail-safe defaults, and the principle of least privilege. For more information on specific implementations, see the Security Implementation Guide and Security Configuration Guide.

Authentication & Authorization
The platform uses a robust system for authentication and authorization, combining JWTs for stateless authentication and a granular Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) system for authorization.

JWT Authentication
Authentication is handled using JSON Web Tokens (JWT), compliant with RFC 7519. This system uses a pair of tokens: a short-lived access token and a long-lived refresh token.
Key Features:
- Access Tokens: 15-minute expiry for enhanced security.
- Refresh Tokens: 7-day expiry with automatic rotation and reuse detection.
- Signing Algorithm: HMAC-SHA256 (HS256) is used for signing tokens.
- Secure Keys: Requires a minimum 256-bit secret key, managed via environment variables.
- Token Blacklisting: A mechanism is in place for immediate token revocation.
- Comprehensive Verification: All critical claims (
exp, aud, iss) are verified upon token decoding.

The following diagram illustrates the token creation and verification flow.
Role-Based Access Control (RBAC)
The platform implements a five-tier RBAC hierarchy to enforce the principle of least privilege. Higher roles inherit all permissions from lower roles.
This diagram shows the inheritance hierarchy of user roles.

| Role | Level | Description |
|---|---|---|
| SUPER_ADMIN | 5 | Full system access, user management. |
| ADMIN | 4 | Brand management, workflow execution, marketing. |
| DEVELOPER | 3 | API access, code generation, content creation. |
| API_USER | 2 | Limited API access for read/write operations. |
| READ_ONLY | 1 | View-only access to dashboards and non-sensitive data. |

Endpoint access is controlled using a dependency that checks for the required role.
from fastapi import Depends
from security.jwt_auth import require_role, UserRole
@router.post("/assets/upload")
async def upload_asset(
request: AssetUploadRequest,
user: Dict = Depends(require_role(UserRole.DEVELOPER))
):
# Only DEVELOPER, ADMIN, and SUPER_ADMIN can access this endpoint
pass

Account Security
- Password Hashing: Passwords are hashed using
bcryptwith 12 rounds. Argon2id is also available. - Password Policy: Minimum 12 characters with complexity requirements.
- Failed Login Protection: Accounts are locked for 15 minutes after 5 failed login attempts.

Encryption
DevSkyy employs strong encryption for data both at rest and in transit.
Data at Rest
Sensitive data stored in the database is encrypted using AES-256-GCM, which complies with NIST SP 800-38D. This authenticated encryption mode provides both confidentiality and integrity. Master keys are managed securely via environment variables.
Sources: SECURITY.md:65-70, SECURITY_IMPLEMENTATION.md:107-111
Data in Transit
All API communications are secured using TLS 1.3, and the server is configured to enforce HTTPS-only connections via the Strict-Transport-Security (HSTS) header.

Input Validation and Sanitization
To protect against common web vulnerabilities, the platform implements a multi-layered input validation and sanitization strategy, guided by OWASP Top 10 recommendations.
The following flowchart shows the process for handling user input.
Key Protections
- SQL Injection (SQLi): Prevented by using parameterized queries with SQLAlchemy ORM. The system also includes pattern detection for common SQLi payloads.
- Cross-Site Scripting (XSS): Mitigated through automatic HTML escaping in Jinja2 templates and sanitization of all user-generated content before rendering.
- Code & Command Injection: Dangerous functions like
eval()are replaced with safe alternatives, such as an AST-based_safe_evalthat only permits a restricted set of operations. - Path Traversal: User-provided paths are sanitized to prevent access to unintended directories.
- Pydantic Validation: All API endpoints use Pydantic models to enforce strict type and format validation on incoming data.

API Security
Security Headers
The application middleware adds several HTTP headers to enhance browser-level security.
| Header | Purpose |
|---|---|
Content-Security-Policy | Prevents XSS and data injection attacks. |
Strict-Transport-Security | Enforces the use of HTTPS. |
X-Frame-Options | Protects against clickjacking attacks. |
X-Content-Type-Options | Prevents MIME-type sniffing. |
X-XSS-Protection | Enables the browser's built-in XSS filter. |

Rate Limiting
To prevent abuse and DoS attacks, the API implements rate limiting.
- Default Limit: 100 requests per minute per IP address.
- Burst Protection: Allows for short bursts of up to 10 requests per second.
- Endpoint-Specific Limits: Critical endpoints, like authentication, have stricter limits.

Secret Management
The platform adheres to a strict "No hardcoded secrets" policy, as required by the internal Truth Protocol.
- Environment Variables: All secrets, including API keys, database URLs, and JWT secrets, are loaded from environment variables.
- Configuration Files: A
.env.examplefile is provided as a template, while the actual.envfile is included in.gitignoreto prevent accidental commits. - Pre-commit Hooks: The repository is configured with
pre-commithooks, includingdetect-secrets, to automatically scan for secrets before they are committed. - Secure Key Generation: Scripts and commands are provided to generate cryptographically secure keys.
# Generate a secure 256-bit secret key for JWT
openssl rand -hex 32

Dependency Security
Dependency management is a key part of the security strategy, focusing on minimizing the attack surface and quickly patching vulnerabilities.
- Version Pinning: All production dependencies are pinned to exact versions (
==) inrequirements.txtto ensure reproducibility and prevent unexpected changes. - Automated Scanning: The CI/CD pipeline integrates tools like
pip-auditandsafetyto scan for known vulnerabilities in dependencies. - Update Policy: A clear policy is in place for addressing vulnerabilities based on severity.
| Severity | Update Timeline |
|---|---|
| Critical | Patched within 24 hours |
| High | Patched within 7 days |
| Medium/Low | Addressed in regular update cycles |

Compliance
The system includes modules and practices to support compliance with data protection regulations.
GDPR
The platform provides features to help comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
- Right to Access: Functionality to export all data associated with a user.
- Right to Erasure: Functionality to permanently delete a user's data ("right to be forgotten").
The diagram below shows the flow for a user data export request.

Summary
DevSkyy's security is founded on a defense-in-depth strategy that integrates modern, industry-standard practices at every layer of the application. From robust JWT authentication and granular RBAC to strong encryption, rigorous input validation, and secure dependency management, the platform is designed to be resilient against common threats. The adherence to strict secret management protocols and a proactive approach to vulnerability patching further solidifies its enterprise-grade security posture. These measures ensure the platform is not only secure by design but also maintainable and ready for compliance audits.
