Build Configuration (Vite)
Relevant source files
The following files were used as context for generating this wiki page:
This document outlines the build and development configuration for the AI Image Gen application, which is managed by Vite. Vite serves as the build tool and development server, providing features like Hot Module Replacement (HMR), optimized production builds, and environment variable management. The configuration is primarily defined in vite.config.ts and orchestrated through scripts in package.json.
The project is a static Single Page Application (SPA) built with React and TypeScript. Vite's role is to process the source files (like .tsx and .ts), bundle them into static JavaScript, CSS, and HTML assets, and serve them efficiently during both development and for production deployment.
Core Configuration (vite.config.ts)
The main configuration for Vite is located in vite.config.ts. This file defines the behavior of the development server, plugins, environment variables, and module resolution.

}
}

Configuration Breakdown
The configuration object exported from vite.config.ts contains several key properties that control Vite's behavior.
| Key | Value | Description | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
server | { port: 3000, host: '0.0.0.0' } | Configures the development server to run on port 3000 and be accessible from the local network. | vite.config.ts:8-11 |
plugins | [react()] | Integrates the official Vite plugin for React, enabling features like React Fast Refresh (HMR) and automatic JSX runtime. | vite.config.ts:12 |
define | { 'process.env.GEMINI_API_KEY': ... } | Performs static replacements, injecting environment variables (loaded via loadEnv) into the client-side code. This makes process.env.GEMINI_API_KEY available in the application's source. | vite.config.ts:6, vite.config.ts:13-16 |
resolve.alias | { '@': path.resolve(__dirname, '.') } | Sets up a module import alias. import '@/components/Icons' will resolve to the project's root directory. This alias is also configured in tsconfig.json for TypeScript's type-checking. | vite.config.ts:17-21, tsconfig.json:17-21 |
Path Alias Resolution
Vite uses the resolve.alias configuration to simplify import paths. This works in tandem with the paths configuration in tsconfig.json to provide a consistent experience for both the bundler and the TypeScript compiler.
The following diagram illustrates how an aliased import is resolved during the build process.

Project Scripts (package.json)
The package.json file defines the scripts used to interact with Vite for development, building, and previewing the application.
| Script | Command | Description |
|---|---|---|
dev | vite | Starts the Vite development server with HMR. This is the primary command used during development. |
build | vite build | Bundles the application for production. It creates an optimized dist directory with static assets. |
preview | vite preview | Starts a local static web server to preview the production build from the dist directory. |

Application Entry Point
Vite uses index.html as the project's main entry point. Unlike traditional bundlers, Vite treats HTML as the first-class citizen that drives the application module graph.
Sources: index.html
Key elements in index.html:
- Module Script: The application is loaded via
<script type="module" src="/index.tsx"></script>. Vite's development server intercepts this request and serves the transpiled entry module. - Import Map: The project utilizes an
importmapto resolve dependencies likereact,react-dom, andlucide-reactfrom a CDN. This allows the browser to handle these imports directly during development, contributing to Vite's speed. For production builds, Vite will still bundle these if not configured otherwise, to ensure optimal performance and avoid multiple network requests.

The entry script index.tsx then renders the main <App /> component into the DOM.

Deployment
The project is a static Single Page Application (SPA) and can be deployed to any static hosting service. The npm run build command generates a dist folder containing the index.html and all necessary bundled assets. This dist folder is the target for deployment.
The README.md provides deployment instructions for platforms like Vercel, Cloudflare Pages, and generic static CDNs, all of which rely on the output of the vite build command.

Summary
The project leverages Vite for a modern and efficient build system. The configuration in vite.config.ts is concise, enabling a powerful development server with HMR, path aliasing, and environment variable injection. The scripts in package.json provide a simple interface for developers to run, build, and preview the application. This setup ensures a fast development loop and produces an optimized static build for production deployment.
