Data Flow
Relevant source files
The following files were used as context for generating this wiki page:
The data flow in the CyberPath application is designed to serve cybersecurity certification information from structured Markdown files to a dynamic, searchable front-end table. This process leverages Astro's content collections to parse and type-check the data, which is then exposed through a series of JSON API endpoints. A client-side React component consumes these endpoints to provide a reactive user experience with features like searching and pagination.
The diagram below illustrates the high-level data flow from the source content to the user interface.
Data Source and Schema
The single source of truth for certification data is a collection of Markdown files located in src/content/certifications. Each file represents a single certification and contains metadata in its frontmatter.
Astro's content collections feature is used to define a strict schema for this data, ensuring type safety and consistency. The schema is defined in src/content.config.ts using Zod.

Certification Schema
The certifications collection has the following schema:
| Field | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
title | string | The full title of the certification. |
acronym | string | The common acronym for the certification. |
last_updated_at | date | The date the certification information was last updated. |
image | image() | An optimized image associated with the certification. |
reference | string | A URL to the official certification page. |
aliases | array(string) | (Optional) Alternative names or acronyms. |
draft | boolean | A flag to mark the content as a draft. Defaults to false. |
career_paths | array(enum) | An array of associated career paths from CareerPathsList. |
price | string | The price of the certification exam or materials. |
currency | string | The currency for the price (e.g., USD). |
Sources: src/content.config.ts:8-20, src/lib/career-paths.ts:10-21
The relationship between a certification and its career paths is defined in the schema.
API Endpoints for Data Retrieval
Data from the content collection is exposed to the front end via several JSON API endpoints. These endpoints are responsible for fetching and, in some cases, filtering the certification metadata.
| Endpoint | Method | Description | Source File |
|---|---|---|---|
/database/data.json | GET | Returns an array of all certification metadata objects. | src/pages/database/data.json.ts |
/database/data-index.json | GET | Returns a pre-computed Fuse.js search index for all certifications. | src/pages/database/data-index.json.ts |
/career-paths/[path]/data.json | GET | Returns certification metadata filtered by a specific career path. | src/pages/career-paths/[path]/data.json.ts |
/career-paths/[path]/data-index.json | GET | Returns a Fuse.js search index for certifications within a specific career path. | src/pages/career-paths/[path]/data-index.json.ts |
Core Data Fetching Logic
The getCertificationMetadata function in src/pages/database/data.json.ts is the central utility for retrieving data. It uses Astro's getCollection to load all non-draft certifications, maps them to a CertificationMetadata type, and can optionally apply a filter.

Search Index Generation
To enable fast client-side searching, the application pre-builds a search index using Fuse.js. The GET handler in data-index.json.ts files creates this index from the certification data and returns it as a JSON object. This avoids the need for the client to build the index at runtime.
// src/pages/database/data-index.json.ts:9-12
export const GET: APIRoute = async () => {
const index = Fuse.createIndex(
FuseConfig.keys!,
await getCertificationMetadata(),
);
...

Front-End Data Handling (ReactiveDatatable)
The ReactiveDatatable component, located at src/components/astro/database/reactive-datatable.tsx, is responsible for fetching, displaying, and managing user interactions with the certification data.
Initial Data Fetching
Upon mounting, the component uses a useEffect hook to initiate data fetching. It concurrently requests both the full dataset from /data.json and the pre-computed search index from /data-index.json using radash.all.
This sequence diagram shows the initial loading process of the ReactiveDatatable component.
State Management and Searching
The component manages several state variables:
is_loading: A boolean to track the data fetching status.all_raw_data: An array holding the complete, unfiltered certification data.all_data: AFuseinstance initialized with the fetched data and search index.query: A string that stores the user's search input.pagination: An object managing the current page, total pages, and items per page.
When the query state changes, a useMemo hook re-calculates the display_data. If a query exists, it uses the all_data.search(query) method from Fuse.js to filter the results. If the query is empty, it returns the all_raw_data.

Rendering and Pagination
The component renders the display_data in a table. It uses .slice() to display only the items for the current page, based on the pagination state. The pagination controls are dynamically generated, allowing the user to navigate through the dataset.
// src/components/astro/database/reactive-datatable.tsx:303-309
{ display_data
.slice(
(pagination.page - 1) * pagination.per_page,
pagination.page * pagination.per_page,
)
.map((certification) => (
...

Conclusion
The data flow architecture of CyberPath effectively decouples content from presentation. By treating Markdown files as a structured data source and serving them through dedicated JSON APIs, the system remains scalable and maintainable. The front end benefits from this design by consuming pre-processed and pre-indexed data, enabling a fast, responsive, and feature-rich user experience for exploring cybersecurity certifications.
