Background Service Workers & Messaging

Introduction
The Background Service Worker acts as the central orchestration layer for the Refined GitHub Projects extension. Built using the WXT framework and Manifest V3, it handles sensitive operations that cannot be performed in the Content Script, such as authenticated GitHub API calls using Personal Access Tokens (PATs), sequential task queue management, and cross-component state broadcasting.
Its primary purpose is to decouple the user interface from the heavy-duty logic of mutating GitHub Project items. By utilizing a robust messaging system, it receives instructions from Content Scripts or the extension popup, processes these requests through a rate-limit-aware queue, and provides real-time progress updates back to the UI.

Messaging Architecture
The extension employs a typed messaging system via @webext-core/messaging to facilitate communication between the Content Script (UI) and the Background Service Worker.
Communication Flow
- Request: The Content Script sends a typed message (e.g.,
bulkUpdate,getItemPreview) to the background worker. - Processing: The background worker validates the request, resolves necessary IDs, and initiates the task.
- Broadcasting: For long-running operations, the background worker broadcasts
queueStateUpdatemessages to update the Live Queue Tracker in the UI.
The diagram shows the standard flow for a bulk operation where the background worker manages the sequential execution and notifies the UI of progress.

Core Message Protocol
| Message Type | Direction | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
bulkUpdate | UI → BG | Triggers field updates across multiple items. |
getItemPreview | UI → BG | Fetches detailed metadata for a single item for duplication. |
queueStateUpdate | BG → UI | Broadcasts current progress of a background process. |
searchRepoMetadata | UI → BG | Queries GitHub for labels, assignees, or issue types. |
getHierarchyData | UI → BG | Retrieves sub-issue and relationship data for an item. |

Sequential Queue & Rate Limiting
A critical design requirement is that all mutations must run sequentially. GitHub's API enforces strict abuse limits; concurrent mutations can result in a 403 status and a temporary ban of the user's PAT.
Implementation Logic
The background worker implements a 1-second delay (sleep(1000)) between every mutation task. It also features a "backoff" mechanism that detects 403 or 429 status codes and pauses the queue based on the Retry-After header.
The flow ensures that the extension remains within GitHub's rate limits by reacting to API feedback and enforcing mandatory delays.

Key Handler Modules
The background logic is partitioned into modular handlers that manage specific feature sets:
Bulk Handlers
Located in src/entries/background/handlers/bulk-handlers.ts, this module handles destructive and constructive multi-item operations:
- ID Resolution: Converts DOM-extracted database IDs (e.g.,
issue:123) into valid GraphQL Node IDs usingresolveProjectItemIds. - Mutations: Maps requested changes to specific GraphQL mutations like
UPDATE_PROJECT_FIELD,CLOSE_ISSUE, orTRANSFER_ISSUE. - Concurrency Control: Uses
acquireBulk()andreleaseBulk()to prevent overlapping bulk processes from the same session.

Hierarchy & Relationship Handlers
Located in src/entries/background/handlers/hierarchy-handlers.ts, these handlers manage complex issue linking:
- Validation:
validateBulkRelationshipUpdateschecks for circular dependencies (e.g., an issue cannot be its own parent or block itself) before execution. - Preview:
getItemPreviewaggregates field definitions, current values, and relationships into a singleItemPreviewDataobject.

Field Handlers
Located in src/entries/background/handlers/field-handlers.ts, this module provides autocomplete and discovery data:
- Metadata Search: Interfaces with GraphQL to search for
ASSIGNEES,LABELS, andISSUE_TYPESwithin a specific repository scope. - Reorder Context: Calculates the relative positions of items for
bulkReorderoperations.

Data Models
The background worker uses several key TypeScript interfaces to ensure type safety across the messaging boundary.
ResolvedItem
Used during the resolution phase to map DOM elements to API nodes.
export interface ResolvedItem {
domId: string;
issueNodeId: string;
projectItemId: string;
repoOwner: string;
repoName: string;
issueDatabaseId: number;
issueNumber?: number;
typename?: 'Issue' | 'PullRequest';
}

QueueStateUpdate
The structure sent to the UI to drive the Live Queue Tracker.
interface QueueStateUpdate {
total: number;
completed: number;
paused: boolean;
retryAfter?: number;
status?: string;
detail?: string;
processId?: string;
failedItems?: Array<{ id: string; title: string; error: string }>;
}

Summary
The Background Service Worker and Messaging system form the backbone of the extension's reliability. By centralizing API interactions and enforcing sequential execution with mandatory delays, the architecture ensures high-volume bulk operations remain safe from GitHub's rate-limiting triggers. The modular handler design allows for clean separation between simple metadata lookups and complex, multi-stage mutation workflows.
