Shadow DOM & Primer Integration

Introduction
The Refined GitHub Projects extension utilizes Shadow DOM to isolate its injected UI components from the native GitHub environment. This architectural choice ensures that the extension's styles do not leak into the GitHub interface and, conversely, that GitHub's global styles do not inadvertently break the extension's functional components.
To maintain a "native" look and feel, the project integrates GitHub's own design system, Primer, through @primer/react. However, because Primer is designed for standard Document Object Model (DOM) environments, the project implements specific compatibility layers and theme providers to bridge the gap between Primer's expectations and the isolated Shadow DOM environment.

Architectural Overview
The integration relies on a multi-layered approach to UI injection. The setupContentUi function orchestrates the creation of multiple Shadow Roots for different UI elements, such as the Bulk Actions Bar, Queue Tracker, and Sprint Panel.
The Injection Flow
When the content script initializes, it identifies injection points and anchors Shadow Root containers to the document body or specific GitHub UI elements. Each container is wrapped in a StyleSheetManager to direct styled-components to the correct Shadow Root and a ShadowThemeProvider to provide Primer's design tokens.
The diagram shows the sequence from script initialization to the final isolated component rendering.

Primer Shadow DOM Compatibility
Primer components often rely on Portals (via registerPortalRoot) for elements like modals and tooltips. Within a Shadow DOM, these portals must be explicitly managed to render within the shadow boundary rather than the document body.
Portal Management
The PrimerPortalRootHost component is used to register a specific Box as the root for Primer portals within the Shadow DOM. This uses a constant name BULK_BAR_PRIMER_PORTAL_NAME.
| Component/Variable | Description |
|---|---|
PrimerPortalRootHost | Mounts a div inside the shadow root and registers it for Primer Portals. |
BULK_BAR_PRIMER_PORTAL_NAME | The identifier used to link Primer components to the shadow root portal. |
ShadowThemeProvider | Wraps children in Primer's ThemeProvider while ensuring CSS variables are accessible. |
StyleSheetManager | Directs CSS generation to the specific shadow root to prevent style leakage. |

CSS Isolation and Environment Stubs
A critical challenge in the integration is that content scripts run in an isolated world. The project stubs out certain Primer elements that fail in these environments. For instance, @primer/live-region-element is stubbed out in wxt.config.ts to prevent customElements errors.
// wxt.config.ts:31-34
resolve: {
alias: {
// Stub out @primer/live-region-element to prevent customElements error in content scripts
'@primer/live-region-element': path.resolve(__dirname, 'src/lib/primer-live-region-stub.ts'),
},
},

Component-Specific Injections
The extension differentiates between "inline" UI (Shadow DOM) and "enhancement" UI (Direct DOM manipulation).
Shadow UI Modules
The following modules are mounted via createShadowRootUi in content-ui.tsx:
- Bulk Actions Bar: Floating menu for multi-item operations.
- Queue Tracker: Real-time progress indicator for API mutations.
- Toast List: Notification system.
- Onboarding Coach: User guidance system.
- Sprint Panel: Modal-driven sprint management.
Direct DOM Enhancements
Some UI elements, like Hierarchy Chips and Sprint Header Badges, are injected directly into GitHub's existing DOM structure to ensure they scroll and behave as part of the native table.
This diagram illustrates the dual-path injection strategy used for isolation vs. integration.

Configuration and Manifest Integration
The wxt.config.ts file manages the web-accessible resources necessary for Shadow DOM styles. It includes logic to clean up and merge resources in the generated manifest to ensure CSS files (like content.css) are correctly matched and loaded within the extension's UI components.
| Property | Value/Logic |
|---|---|
cssInjectionMode | Set to 'ui' in defineContentScript. |
web_accessible_resources | Includes content-scripts/content.css for GitHub matches. |
StyleSheetManager target | Dynamically created styleHost div inserted before the container. |

Conclusion
The Shadow DOM and Primer integration in Refined GitHub Projects provides a robust framework for extending GitHub's functionality without technical debt or UI fragility. By combining isolated Shadow Roots with Primer's design tokens and custom portal handling, the extension achieves a seamless, native-feeling user experience that is resilient to GitHub's internal CSS changes.
