The Chat Interface UI serves as the primary interaction point for users to communicate with the AI assistant. It provides a structured environment for entering prompts, viewing conversation history, and facilitating the generation of full-stack applications. The interface is designed to handle streaming responses, markdown rendering, and integration with the project's workbench for real-time code updates.
Built using Remix and the Vercel AI SDK, the chat system manages complex states including message history persistence, prompt enhancement, and synchronized UI transitions between the initial "intro" state and the active "chatting" state.
Component Architecture
The chat interface is composed of several nested components that separate concerns between state management, layout, and content rendering.
Core Components
| Component | Description |
|---|---|
Chat | The entry point component that initializes hooks for AI SDK integration, history persistence, and message parsing. |
BaseChat | A presentational component that handles the layout, prompt input (textarea), and the main scroll area for messages. |
Messages | A client-side component responsible for iterating over message arrays and rendering user or assistant bubbles. |
Markdown | Handles the conversion of raw message strings into formatted HTML using react-markdown and custom plugins. |
CodeBlock | A specialized component for syntax highlighting within the chat using the Shiki library. |

Layout and State Flow
The interface utilizes a dual-state layout. Before a chat starts, it displays a centralized intro heading and example prompts. Once a message is sent, the UI transitions to a split-view or full-chat mode where messages are rendered in a scrollable list.
The transition is managed by the runAnimation function which hides the #intro and #examples elements before setting the chatStarted state to true.

Message Processing and Rendering
The UI handles two distinct roles: user and assistant. Each message type is processed differently to ensure clarity and technical accuracy.
User Messages
User messages are sanitized to remove internal modification tags (like <bolt_file_modifications>) before being rendered. This ensures that technical metadata used for the LLM context is not visible to the end-user in the chat bubble.

Assistant Messages and Markdown
Assistant messages are parsed as Markdown. The Markdown component uses remark-gfm and custom rehype plugins to handle:
- Standard Markdown elements (headings, lists, tables).
- Code blocks with syntax highlighting via Shiki.
- Custom "Artifact" components triggered by specific HTML class names (e.g.,
__boltArtifact__).
Prompt Management
The interface provides advanced prompt features located in the prompt container at the bottom of the chat.
Textarea Behavior
The textarea dynamically adjusts its height based on content, up to a maximum defined by the current UI state (400px when chatting, 200px otherwise). It supports Shift + Enter for new lines and triggers sendMessage on a standard Enter key press.

Prompt Enhancement
The "Enhance Prompt" feature allows users to refine their initial queries. While an enhancement is in progress, the UI displays a loading spinner and updates the textarea once the optimized prompt is returned.
| Feature | Implementation | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Enhance Button | IconButton with i-bolt:stars icon | app/components/chat/BaseChat.tsx:165-188 |
| Loading State | enhancingPrompt boolean | app/components/chat/BaseChat.tsx:176-179 |
| Auto-Scroll | scrollTextArea updates scrollTop | app/components/chat/Chat.client.tsx:110-116 |
Data Persistence and History
The chat interface integrates with a local IndexedDB instance to persist conversation history.
- Initial Load: The
useChatHistoryhook checks for a message ID in the loader data and retrieves messages from the database. - Continuous Saving: Every time a new message is received or sent, the
storeMessageHistoryfunction is called to update the record in IndexedDB. - URL Sync: When the first artifact is generated, the app automatically updates the browser URL to reflect the chat's unique ID without a full page reload.

Conclusion
The Chat Interface UI is a state-driven system that facilitates seamless communication between the user and the Bolt AI. By coordinating the AI SDK's streaming capabilities with local persistence and dynamic markdown rendering, it provides a robust environment for interactive software development. The modular design of components like BaseChat and Markdown ensures that the technical complexities of file modifications and syntax highlighting remain performant and visually consistent.
