Terminal Emulator

The Terminal Emulator is a core component of the Bolt development environment, providing a fully functional command-line interface directly in the browser. It allows users to execute shell commands, manage packages, and interact with the Node.js runtime environment provided by StackBlitz WebContainers.
Within the application architecture, the Terminal is integrated into the Workbench, complementing the EditorPanel and Preview modules. It supports multi-terminal sessions, allowing users to run parallel processes such as build scripts, development servers, and general filesystem operations.

System Architecture
The Terminal Emulator follows a reactive architecture where the UI layer (React) communicates with a specialized state management layer (Nanostores), which in turn interfaces with the WebContainer API for process execution.
Logic Flow and Process Attachment
The lifecycle of a terminal begins with the instantiation of an XTerm object in the UI, followed by its registration in the TerminalStore. Once the terminal is "ready," it is attached to a shell process within the WebContainer.
The diagram shows the initialization flow from the React component to the WebContainer process.

Key Components
Terminal Component (Terminal.tsx)
The Terminal component is a memoized React component that wraps the xterm.js library. It handles the low-level rendering, addon loading (Fit and WebLinks), and resize observation.
- FitAddon: Automatically scales the terminal grid to fit its container.
- WebLinksAddon: Enables clickable URLs within the terminal output.
- ResizeObserver: Monitors the container size and triggers
fit()and theonTerminalResizecallback.

Terminal Store (terminal.ts)
Manages the state and lifecycle of all terminal instances and their associated WebContainer processes.
| Method | Description |
|---|---|
toggleTerminal(value?) | Toggles the visibility of the terminal panel. |
attachTerminal(terminal) | Creates a new shell process in the WebContainer and links it to the provided terminal instance. |
onTerminalResize(cols, rows) | Propagates UI resize events to the underlying WebContainer process. |

User Interface & Integration
The terminal is housed within the EditorPanel and is controlled by the WorkbenchStore. Users can manage up to 3 terminal instances simultaneously.
Multi-Terminal Management
The EditorPanel tracks terminalCount and activeTerminal state. It allows users to add new terminals via an IconButton and switch between them using a tab-like interface.
The sequence shows the creation of a new terminal instance and its attachment to a backend process.

Configuration & Theming
The terminal's appearance is driven by CSS variables defined in the global theme, allowing it to switch between light and dark modes dynamically.
| Option | Default / Value | Description |
|---|---|---|
fontSize | 12 | Base font size for the terminal text. |
fontFamily | Menlo, courier-new, ... | Monospaced font stack for terminal rendering. |
cursorBlink | true | Enables the blinking cursor. |
convertEol | true | Handles end-of-line conversion for consistent display. |
readonly | boolean | If true, stdin is disabled and the cursor is hidden. |

Process Communication
Data flow between the UI and the backend is handled via the WebContainerProcess.
- Input: User keystrokes in
xterm.jsare sent to the standard input (stdin) of the shell process. - Output: Data from the process's standard output (
stdout) is written back to thexterm.jsinstance usingterminal.write(). - Resizing: When the UI dimensions change, the
TerminalStorecallsprocess.resize({ cols, rows })to ensure the pseudo-terminal (PTY) in the WebContainer stays in sync.

Summary
The Terminal Emulator provides a critical bridge between the user and the WebContainer environment. By leveraging xterm.js and a robust store-based management system, it supports complex multi-process workflows with dynamic resizing and theme integration. This module ensures that Bolt functions as a complete IDE, allowing users to perform server-side tasks and environment configurations directly from the browser.
