The testing strategy for the OCR Android App is a multi-layered approach designed to ensure application stability, quality, and maintainability. It covers everything from individual business logic units to complete user-facing functionality. The project roadmap targets an 80%+ code coverage for the domain and data layers, emphasizing the importance of robust testing from the foundation up.
The strategy is broken down into three primary categories: Unit Tests, Integration Tests, and UI Tests. This ensures that business logic is correct, components interact as expected, and the user experience is seamless and bug-free. The project's development plan incorporates testing as a critical part of each phase, from core infrastructure to final release preparation.

Testing Layers Overview
The project's quality assurance is structured across distinct layers, each with a specific focus. This layered approach allows for targeted testing, easier debugging, and a more reliable final product.
This diagram shows the hierarchy of testing layers, from foundational Unit Tests to comprehensive UI Tests, and how they correspond to the application's architectural layers.

Unit Tests
Unit tests form the foundation of the testing strategy, focusing on the smallest parts of the application in isolation. The primary targets for unit testing are the domain and data layers, including use cases, repositories, ViewModels, and data models.

Domain Model Testing
Domain models are pure Kotlin data classes that encapsulate business logic and state. Their tests verify the correctness of their helper functions and properties.
This diagram illustrates the key domain models and the business logic methods within them that are validated by unit tests.

OCRConfig
Tests for OCRConfig ensure that configuration objects are created with correct default values and that derived properties, like the Tesseract data filename, are generated correctly.
| Method/Property Under Test | Description |
|---|---|
getTessdataFileName() | Verifies that the method returns the correct .traineddata filename based on the language code. |
| Default constructor | Confirms that a default OCRConfig instance has the expected values for language, modes, and preprocessing flags. |
| Custom constructor | Ensures that custom values provided during instantiation correctly override the defaults. |

OCRResult
OCRResult tests validate the helper functions used to interpret and format the outcome of an OCR operation.
| Method/Property Under Test | Description |
|---|---|
hasAcceptableConfidence() | Checks if the confidence score is above a given threshold. |
hasText() | Verifies that the result contains non-empty extracted text. |
getConfidencePercentage() | Ensures the confidence score (a float from 0-1) is correctly formatted as a percentage string. |
getProcessingTimeSeconds() | Confirms correct conversion from milliseconds to seconds. |
wordCount / characterCount | Validates the calculation of text metrics. |

ImageQuality
Tests for ImageQuality focus on the logic that determines if an image requires preprocessing and what feedback to provide to the user.
| Method/Property Under Test | Description |
|---|---|
needsPreprocessing() | Verifies that this returns true for images with low brightness or high blur, and false for good quality images. |
getQualityDescription() | Checks that appropriate user-facing messages are generated based on the quality scores (e.g., "blurry", "dark", "Good quality"). |

Data Layer Testing
Testing the data layer involves verifying the logic of mappers and repositories. This is achieved by isolating the component under test from its dependencies, such as the database.
Scan Mapper Testing
The ScanMapper is responsible for converting data between the ScanEntity (database object) and ScanResult (domain model). Tests ensure this conversion is lossless and handles all fields correctly, including edge cases like empty tag lists.
The following diagram illustrates the bidirectional testing flow for the mapper.
Repository Testing
The ScanRepositoryImpl is tested in isolation by mocking its ScanDao dependency. This allows for verification of the repository's logic without needing a real database. Tests cover all CRUD operations, search functionality, and error handling.
The sequence diagram below shows how a test for getScanById interacts with the repository and its mocked DAO.
This diagram shows the test method calling the repository, which in turn calls the mocked DAO. The mock returns a predefined entity, allowing the test to verify the repository's mapping and wrapping logic.

The repository tests cover a comprehensive set of methods:
| Method Under Test | Description of Test |
|---|---|
insertScan | Verifies a ScanResult is correctly mapped and passed to the DAO, and that database errors are caught. |
getScanById | Ensures the repository returns a Result.Success when the DAO finds a scan and Result.Error when it doesn't. |
getAllScans | Confirms that a flow of entities from the DAO is correctly mapped to a flow of domain models. |
deleteScan | Verifies the deleteById method on the DAO is called. |
searchScans | Checks that the search query is passed to the DAO and the results are mapped correctly. |
updateFavoriteStatus | Ensures the DAO method is called with the correct scan ID and favorite status. |
getFavoriteScans | Verifies that only scans marked as favorites are returned. |
getScansByLanguage | Checks that the DAO is queried with the correct language code. |
getScansCount | Confirms the repository returns the total count provided by the DAO. |
deleteOldScans | Verifies the repository correctly calls the DAO to delete scans older than a specified date. |
getHighConfidenceScans | Ensures scans are correctly filtered by a confidence threshold. |

Integration and UI Testing (Planned)
While the provided files focus on unit tests, the project's ROADMAP.md and TODO.md outline a clear strategy for higher-level testing.
Integration Tests
These tests are planned to verify the interaction between different components of the app. Key areas for integration testing include:
- Room Database: Testing full database operations, including insertions, queries, and especially migrations, to ensure data integrity between app versions.
- End-to-End OCR Pipeline: Using test images with known text to validate the entire pipeline, from image preprocessing to text extraction, ensuring accuracy and handling of error scenarios.
- Navigation Flows: Verifying that navigation between different screens works as expected.

UI Tests
UI tests are planned to validate user-facing functionality and critical user flows from the user's perspective.
- Camera Screen: Testing permission handling and the image capture button.
- History List: Verifying interactions like scrolling, searching, and deleting items.
- Settings: Confirming that changes made in the settings screen (e.g., theme switching) are correctly applied.

Summary
The testing strategy for the OCR Android App is comprehensive, covering all layers of the clean architecture model. It starts with a strong foundation of unit tests for domain logic and data handling, as evidenced by the existing test suites for models, mappers, and repositories. The strategy extends to planned integration and UI tests that will ensure all components work together correctly to deliver a stable, high-quality, and reliable application. This structured approach is crucial for long-term maintainability and successful feature development.
