Project Roadmap & TODOs
Relevant source files
The following files were used as context for generating this wiki page:This document provides a comprehensive overview of the development roadmap, planned features, and outstanding tasks for the Material Expressive Android OCR App. The project's vision is to create a modern, offline-first Android application that allows users to quickly and accurately extract text from images using a Material Design 3 interface. All processing is designed to happen on-device for privacy and accessibility.
The development plan is broken down into distinct phases, starting with foundational infrastructure and progressively building out features like camera integration, OCR processing, history management, and user settings. This structured approach ensures that core functionality is robust before more advanced features are added. The accompanying TODO list provides a granular breakdown of tasks within each development phase, categorized by priority and area of focus (e.g., Core Features, UI, Testing).

Project Vision and Core Principles
The application is designed for students, professionals, and anyone needing on-the-go text extraction, especially in areas with limited internet. The core value propositions are centered around user experience, privacy, and performance.
- ✨ Completely Offline: Works anywhere without an internet connection.
- 🎨 Modern Material Design 3 UI: Features dynamic theming.
- ⚡ Fast and Accurate: Utilizes the Tesseract OCR engine.
- 🗂️ Local Storage: Provides a searchable history of scans.
- 🌍 Multi-language Support: Aims to support over 100 languages.
- 🔒 Privacy-First: All processing occurs on the device.
- ♿ Accessibility-First: Development follows WCAG 2.1 AA compliance from the start.

Architecture Overview
The project follows a Clean Architecture pattern with MVVM, separating concerns into three main layers: Presentation, Domain, and Data. This structure promotes testability, maintainability, and a decoupled codebase.
The diagram below illustrates the architectural layers and their responsibilities.

Development Phases
The project is structured into multiple development phases, each with specific goals and milestones. The roadmap provides a high-level timeline, while the TODO list contains the detailed tasks for each milestone.
The following diagram shows the planned sequence of development phases.

Phase 1: Core Infrastructure
This phase focuses on establishing the data layer with Room and integrating the Tesseract OCR engine.
- Milestone 1.1: Database Layer: Involves designing the database schema for storing scan results.
- Milestone 1.2: Tesseract Integration: Focuses on setting up the
TessBaseAPI, creating anOCRServicewrapper, and implementing basic image preprocessing. - Milestone 1.3: Hilt Module Configuration: Wires up all dependencies for the database, repositories, and OCR service.

Database Schema
The scans table is the core entity for storing OCR results. The schema is designed to hold the extracted text, image reference, and associated metadata.

Phase 3: OCR Processing Pipeline
This phase builds the end-to-end workflow for processing an image and displaying the results. It includes advanced image preprocessing, progress tracking, and a results screen.

OCR Processing Flow
The flow begins with the user providing an image, which then goes through several stages of processing before the final text is displayed. The OCRServiceImpl and OCRProgress model define these stages.
This flowchart shows the steps involved in the OCR processing pipeline.
The processing stages are tracked to provide feedback to the user:
- INITIALIZING: Sets up the Tesseract engine.
- PREPROCESSING: Applies transformations like grayscale and scaling.
- RECOGNIZING: The core text recognition step.
- COMPLETED: Finalizes the result.

Phase 4: History & Data Management
This phase is dedicated to building features for managing saved scans, including a history list, search and filter capabilities, and a detail view.
- History List: A
LazyColumnwill display saved scans with thumbnails and snippets. - Search & Filter: Full-text search with debouncing, plus filtering by date and language.
- Management: Actions like delete, re-process, and export will be available.

Phase 5: Settings & Customization
This phase introduces user-configurable settings, most notably for theme and language management.
- Theme Settings: Light/Dark/System theme selection.
- Language Management: A screen to list, download, and delete
tessdatalanguage files. This is a critical feature for supporting multiple languages and managing storage.

Risk Management
The project roadmap identifies several technical and project risks and outlines mitigation strategies. A key concern is storage management due to the size of images and Tesseract language files.
| Risk | Impact | Probability | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tesseract performance issues | High | Medium | Optimize preprocessing; test on low-end devices. |
| Uncontrolled storage growth | High | High | Implement storage quota checks, compression, and cleanup policies. |
| Camera compatibility issues | Medium | Medium | Test on various devices; provide a fallback to the gallery. |
| Scope creep | Medium | High | Adhere to the roadmap and prioritize features ruthlessly. |
