Feature: Local Music Playback
Relevant source files
The following files were used as context for generating this wiki page:The Local Music Playback feature provides users with the ability to upload and play their own audio files directly within the application. This functionality is part of a dual-mode audio system, operating alongside an online streaming option. It is designed to work entirely client-side, ensuring user privacy and enabling offline music playback. The system supports standard audio formats, metadata extraction for track information and cover art, and comprehensive playlist management.
The user's choice of audio source ('local' or 'online') is persisted in localStorage, but the local playlist itself is session-based and not stored between page reloads.

Architecture Overview
The local playback feature is structured around a clear separation of concerns, using a primary logic hook (useLocalPlayer), a controller component (AudioPlayer), and a reusable UI component (PlayerInterface).
The diagram below illustrates the interaction between these key components.
This diagram shows how the App component contains the AudioPlayer, which acts as a controller to switch between local and online modes. For local playback, it utilizes the useLocalPlayer hook for logic and the PlayerInterface for the UI.
App.tsx: The root component that manages the global state, including the selected audio source (localoronline), which is persisted tolocalStorage.AudioPlayer.tsx: Acts as a high-level controller. It contains the logic to switch between the local and online players. It initializes theuseLocalPlayerhook and passes its state and functions down to thePlayerInterfacecomponent. It also manages the file input and the rendering of the playlist modal.useLocalPlayer.ts: A custom React hook that encapsulates all the logic for local music playback. This includes managing the playlist, controlling the HTML<audio>element, handling track changes, and processing uploaded files.PlayerInterface.tsx: A purely presentational component that renders the player's user interface (controls, progress bar, track info, cover art). It is stateless and receives all data and callbacks as props, making it reusable for both local and online players.

Core Logic: useLocalPlayer Hook
The useLocalPlayer hook is the brain of the local playback system. It manages the audio state and provides an API for interacting with the player.

State Management
The hook manages the player's state using useState and useRef.
| State/Ref | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
audioRef | React.RefObject<HTMLAudioElement> | A ref to the underlying <audio> element for direct DOM manipulation (play, pause, seek, etc.). |
playlist | LocalTrack[] | An array of LocalTrack objects representing the user's uploaded songs. |
currentIndex | number | The index of the currently playing track in the playlist. |
isPlaying | boolean | The current playback status (playing or paused). |
currentTime | number | The current playback time in seconds. Updated on a throttled basis. |
duration | number | The total duration of the current track in seconds. |
volume | number | The audio volume, from 0.0 to 1.0. Defaults to DEFAULT_MUSIC_VOLUME. |
playMode | PlayMode | The current playback mode: SEQUENCE, LOOP, or RANDOM. |
isLoading | boolean | A flag indicating if the audio track is currently buffering or loading. |

Data Structures
The LocalTrack interface defines the structure for each item in the local playlist.
| Field | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
id | string | A unique identifier generated from file properties (name-size-lastModified). |
file | File | The original File object uploaded by the user. |
name | string | The track's name, extracted from metadata or derived from the filename. |
artist | string | The track's artist, extracted from metadata if available. |
blobUrl | string | A blob URL created via URL.createObjectURL(file) for the <audio> element's src. |
coverUrl | string | A blob URL for the album cover, extracted from file metadata if available. |

Key Functions and Logic
File Handling and Metadata Extraction
When files are added via the addFiles function, the system performs several steps:
- It checks for duplicates based on file name, size, and last modified date to prevent adding the same track multiple times.
- It uses the
music-metadatalibrary to parse the audio file blob. - It attempts to extract metadata such as
title, artist, andpicture(album art). - If a title is found in the metadata, it's used as the track name; otherwise, the filename (without extension) is used as a fallback.
- Blob URLs are created for the audio file and its cover art using
URL.createObjectURL. These URLs are used by the browser to access the local file data.

The sequence diagram below shows the process of adding a file.
Playback Control
The hook exposes functions to control playback, which internally manipulate the HTMLAudioElement.
togglePlay(): Toggles theisPlayingstate. AuseEffecthook observes this state and callsaudioRef.current.play()oraudioRef.current.pause().playTrack(index): Sets thecurrentIndexto the specified index and setsisPlayingtotrue, triggering a track change.handleNext()/handlePrev(): Calculates the next or previous track index based on the currentplayMode.seek(time): SetsaudioRef.current.currentTimeto jump to a specific point in the track.setVolume(volume): SetsaudioRef.current.volume.

Playback Modes
The player supports three playback modes, defined in src/types.ts as PlayMode. The toggleMode function cycles through them.
| Mode | Icon (from PlayerInterface) | Behavior on Track End (handleNext) |
|---|---|---|
SEQUENCE | ri-repeat-line | Plays the next track in the playlist. Stops after the last track. |
LOOP | ri-repeat-one-line | Restarts the current track from the beginning. |
RANDOM | ri-shuffle-line | Plays a random track from the playlist, ensuring it's not the same as the current one (if playlist > 1). |

Resource Management
To prevent memory leaks, the hook is careful to release blob URLs when they are no longer needed. URL.revokeObjectURL() is called in three key places:
removeTrack(index): When a single track is removed from the playlist.clearPlaylist(): When the entire playlist is cleared.- Component Unmount: A
useEffectcleanup function ensures all blob URLs from the current playlist are revoked when theAudioPlayercomponent is unmounted.

User Interface
The UI for the local player is composed of the AudioPlayer component, which orchestrates the functionality, and the PlayerInterface component, which renders the controls.
AudioPlayer Component
This component serves as the main entry point for the audio feature.
- It maintains the
audioSourcestate ('local'or'online') and persists it tolocalStorage. - It renders a button to toggle between local and online modes. This button is disabled if the user is offline.
- When in
'local'mode, it renders thePlayerInterfaceand a hidden file input element. - It manages a modal dialog for the playlist, which is rendered into the document body using
createPortal. This modal allows users to view the playlist, play specific tracks, remove tracks, clear the list, and add more files.

PlayerInterface Component
This is a generic, reusable UI component that displays the player controls and track information. It is used for both local and online playback. Its props directly map to the state and functions provided by the useLocalPlayer (or useOnlinePlayer) hook.
Key UI elements include:
- Track name and artist.
- Album cover (if available).
- A custom, draggable progress bar showing current time and duration.
- Playback controls: Previous, Play/Pause, Next.
- A button to open the playlist modal.
- A button to toggle the playback mode (
SEQUENCE,LOOP,RANDOM). - A custom, draggable volume bar.

Conclusion
The Local Music Playback feature is a robust, client-side module that provides core music player functionality without relying on a server. Its architecture effectively separates concerns between UI (PlayerInterface), control logic (AudioPlayer), and state management (useLocalPlayer). Key implementation details include the use of the music-metadata library for rich metadata, careful resource management of blob URLs to prevent memory leaks, and a flexible playback system with multiple modes. This feature enhances the application by offering an offline-capable and privacy-focused alternative to online streaming.
