State Management
Relevant source files

State is managed at the component level, with the root App component acting as the primary state authority for global settings and session data.
A key aspect of the architecture is data persistence. Critical application state, such as user settings, Pomodoro timer status, and task lists, is serialized and stored in the browser's localStorage. This ensures that the user's context is preserved across page reloads and browser sessions. State is loaded from localStorage during component initialization and is written back whenever it changes using useEffect hooks.
Core State Architecture
The primary state is managed within the App.tsx component and propagated down to child components via props. Child components manage their own internal UI state but rely on callbacks (e.g., onSessionsUpdate) to lift state changes up to the App component for global state modifications.
This diagram illustrates the high-level state flow from the main App component to its children.

Application Initialization and State Loading
On application startup, the App component initializes its state by attempting to read and parse data from localStorage. If no saved data is found or if parsing fails, it falls back to a set of default values.
This sequence diagram shows the state initialization process.

State Persistence
State persistence is achieved using the useEffect hook, which triggers a localStorage.setItem call whenever a piece of state it depends on is updated.
LocalStorage Usage
The application uses several keys to store different parts of the state in localStorage.
| Key | Stored Data | Managed In |
|---|---|---|
origin_terminal_settings | User configuration (Settings object) | src/App.tsx |
origin_terminal_sessions | Count of completed Pomodoro sessions | src/App.tsx |
origin_terminal_total_seconds | Total accumulated work time in seconds | src/App.tsx |
origin_terminal_current_session_start | Timestamp of when the current work session started | src/App.tsx |
origin_terminal_timer | Current state of the Pomodoro timer (TimerPayload object) | src/components/Pomodoro.tsx |
origin_terminal_tasks | The user's list of tasks (Task[] array) | src/components/TaskManager.tsx |
origin_terminal_audio_source | The selected audio player mode ('local' or 'online') | src/components/AudioPlayer.tsx |

Example: Persisting Settings
The settings object is persisted whenever it changes.
// src/App.tsx:191-197
useEffect(() => {
try {
localStorage.setItem(STORAGE_KEYS.SETTINGS, JSON.stringify(settings));
} catch (e) {
console.error('Failed to persist settings', e);
}
}, [settings]);

Feature-Specific State
Global Settings State
The settings state is the most critical piece of global state, controlling timer durations, behavior, and appearance.
| Property | Type | Default Value | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
workDuration | number | 25 | Duration of a work session in minutes. |
shortBreakDuration | number | 5 | Duration of a short break in minutes. |
longBreakDuration | number | 15 | Duration of a long break in minutes. |
autoStartBreaks | boolean | true | Automatically start breaks after a work session. |
autoStartWork | boolean | true | Automatically start work after a break. |
soundEnabled | boolean | true | Enable/disable sound effects. |
soundVolume | number | 0.5 | Volume for sound effects. |
notificationsEnabled | boolean | false | Enable/disable desktop notifications. |
language | Language | Language.CN or Language.EN | Application language. |
theme | ThemePreset | ThemePreset.INDUSTRIAL | The selected UI theme. |
musicConfig | MusicConfig | { server: 'netease', type: 'playlist', id: '9094583817' } | Configuration for the online music player. |

Pomodoro Timer State (Pomodoro.tsx)
The Pomodoro component manages the timer's lifecycle. It has its own internal state that is also persisted to localStorage to survive page reloads, even mid-session.
mode: (TimerMode) The current timer mode (WORK,SHORT_BREAK,LONG_BREAK).timeLeft: (number) The remaining seconds in the current mode.isActive: (boolean) Whether the timer is currently running or paused.
When a timer is active, its state is saved to localStorage with a startTs timestamp. Upon reload, the component calculates the elapsed time since startTs and adjusts timeLeft accordingly.

The timer transitions between modes automatically upon completion.

Task Manager State (TaskManager.tsx)
The TaskManager is a self-contained component that manages a list of tasks.
tasks: (Task[]) An array of task objects, each with anid,text,completedstatus, andcreatedAttimestamp.inputValue: (string) The current value of the new task input field.
The tasks array is initialized from localStorage and is updated back to localStorage in a useEffect hook whenever the array is modified (task added, toggled, or deleted).

Audio Player State (AudioPlayer.tsx)
The AudioPlayer component manages the state for both local and online audio playback.
audioSource: ('local' | 'online') Determines which player logic to use. This choice is persisted inlocalStorage.showPlaylist: (boolean) A UI state to toggle the visibility of the playlist modal.
When audioSource is 'local', it utilizes the useLocalPlayer hook, which encapsulates all state and logic for managing a local playlist, including isPlaying, currentTime, playlist, currentIndex, etc. When audioSource is 'online', it renders the MusicPlayer component, which handles its own state for online streaming.

Summary
The state management in Endfield-Pomodoro is a practical and effective implementation of React's built-in capabilities. By scoping state to the components that need it and using localStorage for persistence, the application remains fast, responsive, and robust against browser refreshes. The App component serves as a centralized hub for global configuration, while feature-specific components like Pomodoro and TaskManager encapsulate their own logic and data, creating a clean and maintainable architecture.
