Adding a New Form Step
Relevant source files
The following files were used as context for generating this wiki page:This document outlines the process for adding a new step to the multi-step form within the react-multi-step-form application. The form is architected around a central parent component, MultiStepForm, which manages state, validation, and navigation between individual step components. Each step is a self-contained React component responsible for rendering its own fields.
Adding a new step requires creating a new step component, integrating it into the MultiStepForm component, updating the central state to accommodate the new fields, and adding corresponding validation logic. The system is designed to be modular, making this process straightforward by following the existing pattern.
Architecture Overview
The core of the feature is the MultiStepForm.jsx component. It acts as a controller, orchestrating the display of different form steps and managing the application's overall state.

Component Hierarchy
The MultiStepForm component is rendered within the main App component. It, in turn, renders the individual step components (PersonalInfo, AddressDetails, etc.) based on the current step state.
This diagram shows the parent-child relationships between the main application components.

State Management
All form data, the current step number, validation errors, and loading status are managed within the MultiStepForm component using React's useState hook. This centralized state is passed down to child components as props.
| State Variable | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
step | Number | The current active step in the form (e.g., 1, 2, 3, 4). |
formData | Object | An object containing all fields from all form steps. |
errors | Object | An object holding validation error messages for the current step's fields. |
loading | Boolean | A flag to indicate when the final submission is in progress. |

The formData object is a flat structure containing all input fields. When adding a new step, you must add its corresponding fields to this initial state.
// src/components/MultiStepForm.jsx:12-24
const [formData, setFormData] = useState({
name: "",
email: "",
phoneNumber: "",
address: "",
city: "",
state: "",
postalCode: "",
cardNumber: "",
expiryDateMonth: "",
expiryDateYear: "",
cvv: "",
});

Step-by-Step Guide to Adding a New Step
This flow chart illustrates the high-level process for adding a new form step.
1. Create the New Step Component
Create a new JSX file in the src/components/formsteps/ directory (e.g., NewStep.jsx). This component should follow the pattern of existing steps like PersonalInfo.jsx. It will receive state and handlers from MultiStepForm via props.
Required Props for a Step Component:
| Prop | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
step | Number | The current step number, used to control visibility. |
formData | Object | The global form data object. |
handleChange | Function | The handler to update formData on input change. |
handleNext | Function | The handler to proceed to the next step after validation. |
handleBack | Function | The handler to return to the previous step. |
errors | Object | The validation errors object. |

Example Component Structure (NewStep.jsx):
import React from "react";
import "../../styles/Form.css";
const NewStep = ({ step, formData, handleChange, handleBack, handleNext, errors }) => {
return (
// The 'active' class is controlled by the current step
<div className={`form-container ${step === /* new step number */ ? "active" : ""}`}>
<h2>New Step Title</h2>
<form>
{/* Add form groups for new inputs */}
<div className="form-group">
<label>New Field</label>
<input
type="text"
name="newField" // Corresponds to key in formData
value={formData.newField}
onChange={handleChange}
className={errors.newField ? "error-input" : ""}
/>
{errors.newField && <p className="error-text">{errors.newField}</p>}
</div>
{/* Navigation buttons */}
<div className="button-group">
<button type="button" onClick={handleBack} className="go-back-btn">
GO BACK
</button>
<button type="button" onClick={handleNext} className="next-btn">
NEXT
</button>
</div>
</form>
</div>
);
};
export default NewStep;

2. Update MultiStepForm.jsx
After creating the component, you must integrate it into the main MultiStepForm controller.
a. Update formData State
Add the new fields from your new step to the initial formData state object.

b. Add Validation Logic
In the validateStep function, add a new if block for your new step number. Define the validation rules for your new fields and add any error messages to the newErrors object.
// src/components/MultiStepForm.jsx:54
const validateStep = (step) => {
let newErrors = {};
// ... existing validation for steps 1, 2, 3
// Add validation for the new step (e.g., step 4)
if (step === 4) { // Assuming the new step is the 4th step
if (!formData.newField.trim()) {
newErrors.newField = "This new field is required";
}
}
setErrors(newErrors);
return Object.keys(newErrors).length === 0;
};

c. Render the New Component
Import your new step component at the top of MultiStepForm.jsx and render it within the form-content div. The order of components determines the sequence of the steps.
// src/components/MultiStepForm.jsx
// ... imports
import NewStep from "./formsteps/NewStep"; // Import the new component
// ... inside the return statement
<div
className="form-content"
style={{ transform: `translateX(-${(step - 1) * 25}%)` }} // Note: width % might need adjustment
>
<PersonalInfo ... />
<AddressDetails ... />
<PaymentInfo ... />
{/* Add the new step component in the desired order */}
<NewStep
formData={formData}
handleChange={handleChange}
handleBack={handleBack}
handleNext={handleNext}
errors={errors}
step={step}
/>
<ReviewSubmit ... />
</div>

d. Adjust Step Count
The total number of steps has now increased. You must update the progress bar calculation and the form-content width.
- Progress Bar: Change the divisor in the width calculation. If you now have 5 steps (including review), change
(step / 4)to(step / 5). - Form Content Width: The
widthof.form-contentinMultiStepForm.cssis400%for 4 forms. For 5 forms, this should be500%.

3. Data Submission
No changes are required for data submission. The handleSubmit function sends the entire formData object to Firebase. Since you added your new fields to this state object, they will be automatically included in the payload sent to the formDetails collection.
This sequence diagram shows the final submission process.
Summary
The modular structure of the multi-step form allows for straightforward extension. By creating a new component that adheres to the established prop interface, updating the central state and validation logic in MultiStepForm.jsx, and rendering the component in the correct sequence, developers can seamlessly add new steps to the form. The centralized data handling ensures that new data is automatically captured and submitted without further modification to the submission logic.
